Buffalo baseball watches season end in regionals

LAWRENCE, Kan. — The Garden City High School baseball team saw their season come to an end Thursday afternoon in Lawrence, falling to Washburn Rural for the second straight year in regional sub-state 12-2 in five innings.

Garden City started off the top of the first with a double by Cooper Thayer followed by a Koby Acker sacrifice bunt to get Thayer to third. Auston Waetzig singled on a hard ground ball into left field and scored the first run for Garden City to make it 1-0. Aaron Urrutia would ground out later in the inning to score Acker and give Garden City a 2-0 lead after the first half inning.

Garden City would never score again and give up one run in the first, three in the second, two in the third, one in the fourth and five runs in the fifth to run-rule the Buffaloes 12-2.

Washburn Rural was lead in hitting by Brady Patterson who went 2-2 at the plate with 2 RBI’s, a run scored and two walks. JC Crowl also knocked in two runs on two hits for the Junior Blues.

Garden City’s Cooper Thayer went 2-3 at the plate and scored a run. Auston Waetzig and Aaron Urrutia both batted in runs.

Washburn Rural’s Alex Blum picked up the victory going five innings and giving up six hits and two runs while striking out five. The Buffaloes’ Cooper Thayer was credited with the loss giving up six runs (four earned) on six hits. Garden City’s defense was also credited with two errors.

Garden City’s season ends at 11-10 after going 5-16 a year ago.
