Broncbusters drop two home games to Coffeyville

Garden City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–In their final home conference games before the semester break, Garden City played host to the Coffeyville Red Ravens Saturday inside Conestoga Arena. It would be a tough day for the home team as turnovers would hurt the Lady Busters in a 56-48 loss, while the Red Raven men hit clutch three’s down the stretch to take an 81-78 victory.

In a game that saw 11 ties and five lead changes, the game would see the margin no wider than four points over the first two and a half quarters. Both teams struggled shooting early, but it would be Coffeyville (9-1, 4-1) who would light it up in the second half. Garden City took a one-point lead at the break at 26-25. The Lady Red Ravens trailed 32-30, and closed the third quater on an 11-2 run to take a 41-34 lead. They pushed their lead to 45-36 with 7:31 left. That’s when Garden City (7-4, 4-2) would make a small rally, pulling to within 47-45 with about two minutes left. Costly second half turnovers would plague the Lady Busters, as they had no answer down the stretch in a 56-48 loss.

Karliey Parker led the way for Coffeyville with 21 poitns, while Karys Washington had 15 points and 11 rebounds and Norika Welch had 11 points. They shot 39% from the field and outrebounded the Lady Busters 40-27. Garden City got 15 points from Sierra Driessen, while Antonicia Moultrie had 10 points and nine rebounds and Hadiya Kennerly provided a first half spark off the bench with eight of her 10 points coming in the first half. They shot 31% from the floor. Garden City’s four-game win streak came to an end in the loss.

Coffeyville Men 81, Garden City 78
The Broncbuster men were looking to get to .500 in conference play, and win two straight in conference play for the first time this year. On the other side, the Red Ravens were looking for a second straight road win this week, and remain at the top of the conference standings. GCCC got out to a hot start, leading 11-3 at the first media timeout, before Coffeyville (9-2, 5-0) slowly chipped away at the deficit, and eventually took a 34-27 lead with 3:06 left before intermission. Garden City (6-5, 2-4) would close the gap on a 12-5 run over the final 2:19 and tie the game at the break at 39. In the second half, the Red Ravens led most of the way, and built a 56-48 lead at the 14-minute mark of the half. The Busters would find a way to take their first lead of the half with 6:56 left at 68-67. The lead went back and forth, until Brian Griffith’s three gave Coffeyville a 76-74 lead with 2:20 left. With the game tied and the shot clock running out, he would hit the go-ahead triple with 34.9 seconds left to put them up 79-76. Garden City had one more shot down 81-78 with five seconds left. The Ravens missed the one-and-one, and the Busters got a three point attempt off, that hit the back iron, and Coffeyville came away with the 81-78 win.

Leading the way for the Ravens was Brian Griffith with 21 points, while Abdul Kuta had 16 points, and Justin Taylor and Daniel Ntambwe added 12, as they went 30-60 from the floor. Garden City got 27 points and 11 rebounds from Antonio Chol, while Caleb Smith had 16 points, Boston Harker 14 and Isaiah Dixon added 10. The Busters went 15-16 from the line.
