Roswell, NM (westernkansasnews.com)-Jacquelynne Matula had been on the job as Head Volleyball Coach of Garden City Community College for all of four days. So no one was expecting any sort of miracle to begin the season.

“We just didn’t play very well,” Matula said following her team’s first setback; a three-set (19-25, 13-25, 13-25) loss to New Mexico Military on Friday. “Things just didn’t go well from the start.”

Consider this: former coach Harvey Sanders resigned his position at the beginning of August. Then Matula, a two-year assistant at Western Nebraska and former player at Texas A&M International, took command of the program on Tuesday, just days after her team had already scrimmaged at Butler.

“It will be a challenge,” Matula said at first. “But we’ve got talent on this team.”

That talent includes sophomore outside hitter Taylor Linenberger, who’s back after a sensation freshman season.

In match two, Garden City showed more poise, but fell short to South Mountain Community College out of Phoenix 23-25, 23-25, 17-25.
