Garden City High School is expanding its coffee shop operation to Garden City Community College and will hold a ribbon cutting for the Broncbuster Coffee Shop on Thursday, August 15th at 1:45 p.m. The coffee shop will be located between the bookstore and the cafeteria in the Beth Tedrow building on the GCCC campus, 801 Campus Drive.

Garden City Community College was looking into a coffee shop and the GCHS Buffalo Coffee School fit what they were looking for on campus. The coffee shop will provide the same service as the GCHS Buffalo Coffee Shop. Along with the main location in the Beth Tedrow building, students will also take two coffee cart stations out into two different buildings on the GCCC campus and sell coffee, lemonade, hot chocolate, cold coffee and pre-packaged snacks.

There are currently seven students enrolled in the program with a teacher and a para-professional. The operation is a transition– to–work program. The goal is to teach students the skills needed to get a job and be employable. The overall goal is for the students to be employed.

This program is expanding the successful program currently at Garden City High School. It provides a continuation of learned skills and makes available a new environment to practice these skills for students that are 18 – 21 years old. It gives students more “real-life” experience than they experience at Garden City High School. Students are also practicing social skills with age-appropriate peers at the college.

For the past number of years, students at Garden City High School’s Buffalo Coffee Shop have been operating their own business and learning life skills. The coffee shop offers coffee, hot chocolate, water, eight different flavors of homemade cereal bars, goldfish crackers and fruit snacks. It usually operates from the start of school until lunch time at the school.

Layla Lappin is the instructor at the new Broncbuster Coffee Shop.
