Beavers use air attack to dismantle Abilene

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Over the last few years, when you think of Scott City Beaver Football, it’s usually power football and solid defense. In the season opener Friday night, the Beavers used an arial  attack with five touchdown passes in a 40-13 season-opening victory over the Abilene Cowboys at Darner Field.

Quarterback Trey O’Neil threw four touchdown passes in the first half, two to both Brayden Strine and Chris Pounds. Strine’s scoring catches were from 75 and 20, while Pounds were from 37 and 65. Brett Meyer came in and tossed a five-yard pass to Pounds for his third catching score of the night. Rounding out the scoring for Scott City was a 17-yard rush from Martin Gough. Freshman Tre Stewart converted four of six point after attempts.

Abilene’s scores came on one play drives in the fourth quarter. Chase Stadler found Dalton Goodwin down the right sideline, and backup quarterback Harley Hazlett scored on an 84-yard run. Keil Kelly was one for two on extra point kicks.

Scott City led 20-0 after the first quarter, 27-0 at halftime and 34-0 after three quarters. 

Up next for Scott City (1-0) will be their league opener against the Colby Eagles at 7:30 pm Friday, September 13 at Darner Field, and can be heard on Mix 94. Colby was shutout at home against the Oakley Plainsmen 26-0.
