Beavers rout TMP-Marian, clinch district title-with audio
Hays, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Scott City had not reached the 40-point mark since week one when they beat Abilene 40-13. It only took one half for the Beavers to eclipse the 40-point mark, as they led 41-0 at halftime, and coasted to a 51-7 win over TMP-Marian in Class 3A, District 15 play. Scott City scored on six of their seven possessions. With the win, coupled by a 53-14 Hoisington win over Russell, the Beavers clinched the district title, ensuring a first round home playoff game Tuesday, November 5.
It took only four plays for Scott City to get the scoring going. Paco Banda would rumble in from 42 yards out with 9:19 left in the first quarter. Tre Stewart booted in the extra point to make it 7-0. After holding TMP to another three and out, the Beavers used short field to go two plays, 47 yards, as Wyatt Kropp found the end zone from 12 yards out, and it was 14-0 with 7:51 left in the quarter. On Scott City’s third possession of the quarter, Kropp would find the end zone again, this time on a 38-yard run with 4:30 left in the first period. Stewart’s kick made it 21-0, which was the score after the first quarter.
In the second period, Scott City capped off an 86-yard drive for their fourth touchdown of the half. Kropp would score his third touchdown of the game on a 27-yard run with 10:33 left before halftime, and the Stewart PAT made it 28-0 Beavers. Following a Monarch fumble, the Beavers would go five plays and 45 yards, as Trey O’Neil connected with Brett Meyer on a nine-yard scoring toss with 7:06 remaining in the second quarter. A Stewart extra point kick would extend the lead to 35-0. Scott City wasn’t done scoring. One play after Warren Kropp sacked TMP quarterback Max Megaffin and forcing a fumble recovered by Cooper Griffith, Brayden Strine had his nicest rush of the year. Strine scored on a 33-yard run with 1:21 left before halftime, and it was 41-0 Beavers at the break.
The third quarter saw only one score, that was off the leg of Tre Stewart, who booted in a 27-yard field goal with 3:06 left in the third quarter to make it 44-0 Scott City. Both teams would score a touchdown in the final period. Thomas Moore Prep capitalized on a Scott City fumble. After converting a pass play on fourth down, Max Megaffin found Grant Romme on a 15-yard pass with 10-36 remaining in the game. Jack You kicked in the extra point to make it 44-7 Scott City. Both teams would trade turnovers early in the fourth quarter. Brett Meyer would pick off Megaffin on fourth down and take it to his own four yard line. The Beavers would eat up 7:31 off the clock to drive 96 yards for the final score of the night. With 1:oo left in the game, James Jurgens rushed it in for an 11-yard touchdown runn. Stewart’s extra point made it 51-7.
Scott City not only put up their season high in points and total yards, they also had a season high in rushing. The Beavers rushed for 457 yards, and amassed a total of 568 yards, while holding TMP-Marian to 218 yards. Paco Banda led the ground attack with his second 100-yard game in three games, with 153 yards on 15 carries. Wyatt Kropp added 84 yards on only five carries. Trey O’Neil was 8-of-10 passing for 109 yards, and a touchdown.
Max Megaffin was 11-of-33 for the Monarchs for 167, and threw a touchdown pass and had an interception. Nick Schmidt was their leading rusher with 22 yards on 10 carries.
Scott City hosts Russell on Thursday night for senior night, while TMP-Marian travels to Hoisington to determine the second spot in District 15. The Broncos are 1-7, after their loss to Hoisington on Friday, while TMP is 2-6.
