Beavers hold off Colby threat-with audio
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Despite having five turnovers, the Scott City Beavers found a way to prevail, as they knocked off the Colby Eagles 28-12 in the GWAC opener for both teams Friday night at Darner Field.
After both teams started out with three-and-outs on their first two possessions, Scott City scored on two straight drives that started in Colby territory. First, a four play, 38-yard drive was capped off by a 12-yard score by Paco Banda. The second was a 21-yard pass play on fourth down from Trey O’Neil to Chantz Yager. A pair of Tim Bolle extra points made it 14-0 Beavers with over a minute remaining in the first period. Colby would strike back on the next offensive play. Quarterback Josh Matchell connected with Adam Giersch on a 53-yard pass play to make it 14-6.
In the second period, Colby would pull to within two on a 35-yard fumble return by Ben Matchell with just under nine minutes left before halftime. Their two-point conversion failed, and it was 14-12 Beavers at the break.
The first two and only two scores by Scott City in the second half seemed like vintage Beavers Football. A seven-play drive was capped off by a one-yard quarterback draw by Trey O’Neil at the 8:56 mark of the third period. Then on their next drive, Scott City capped the scoring off with under four minutes left in the third quarter on Banda’s second rushing score of the game from two yards out. Bolle’s two extra points made it 28-15.
The game turned out to be a little sloppy for the Beavers, but a win is a win. Scott City committed five turnovers, with four fumbles and an interception. Colby committed two turnovers. Brett Meyer made his first career varsity start at quarterback. He and O’Neil rotated in the first half, before we saw O’Neil take a majority of the snaps in the second half. Brayden Strine was limited in action due to an injury suffered against Abilene last week. Wyatt Eitel made his first appearance of the season, after missing the Abilene game. He played along the offensive line and limited reps at linebacker.
Scott City improved to 2-0 overall, 1-0 in the GWAC. The Beavers have won 16 straight GWAC games, and 26 consecutive league games dating back to 2007. Colby dropped their seventh straight game, and are 0-2 overall, 0-1 in Great West Activities Conference play.
Scott City hits the road for the first time this season next Friday night, as they face the Holcomb Longhorns. Holcomb suffered a 20-7 setback in Hugoton, and are 1-1 on the year. Game time is at 7:30 at Holcomb High School.
