Beavers hit the road to face Lakin
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Tonight’s game with Scott City and Lakin features a pair of teams heading in different directions. Scott City, who is 7-0, is looking to remain undefeated and move one step closer to their 10th straight playoff berth, while 2-5 Lakin is trying to stay alive in the playoff hunt.
Scott City got off to a 20-0 first quarter lead against Southwestern Heights last Friday night, en route to a 53-14 win over the Mustangs at Darner Field on Senior Night. The Beavers not only put up a season-best 53 points, they also had a season-high 480 of offense, including 377 yards on the ground. Scott City is led by senior back Cooper Griffith, who has 14 rushing touchdowns and 890 yards, and leads the team in tackles with 80 tackles. Bo Hess has now thrown for 10 touchdowns, including four in the last two games, with Drake McRae hauling in five of those passes. So far in 2015, the Beavers are outscoring their opponents by an average of 37-9.
Lakin enters tonight’s game on a two-game skid, after being shut out 44-0 by Cimarron last Friday night. The Broncs are 2-5 on the season, with two of their losses coming by a combined two points. Their schedule has been tough as well, as two of their losses have come to teams that are ranked in the top three of their classifications (Meade 2-1A, Holcomb 4A, DII). This year’s Lakin team has been decimated by key injuries and feature a lineup of around 5 sophomores and a couple juniors. The Broncs have had wins over rival Syracuse and Stanton County.
Scott City has won six straight in the series, and lead the all-time series with Lakin 11-1. Lakin’s lone win came in 2007, when they beat the Beavers 16-14. This will be the first time since 2010, that the Broncs will play host to Scott City.
