Beaver beatdown; Scott City shuts out Ellsworth
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Business as usual. Playing in their ninth straight Bi-District game, and their sixth straight at Darner Field Tuesday night, the Scott City Beaver accomplished what they had set out to do. Scott City scored 35 points in the first quarter en route to a 56-0 win over the Ellsworth Bearcats at Darner Field. It was Scott City’s 11th straight Bi-District win since 2001.
Scott City wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. In fact, out of their first four offensive plays, three went for touchdowns. The first came on a 19-yard Chantz Yager touchdown run with 10:09 left in the first quarter to make it 6-0. Their second score of the first quarter would also come on the ground. Wyatt Kropp would pull away from the Bearcat defense on a 65-yard run with 6:24 remaining in the first quarter. Cooper Griffith ran in the two-point conversion to make it 14-0 Beavers. Following a Drake McRae interception, Trey O’Neil connected with Brett Meyer on a 19-yard touchdown pass with 5:29 left in the first quarter to extend their lead to 21-0, following the Tre Stewart PAT. With over 90 seconds left in the opening period, Yager found paydirt again, this time from seven yards out. Stewart’s extra point made it 28-0. Following yet another interception, this time by Sloan Baker, Griffith would run it in from four yards out with 29 seconds left in the first quarter to make it 35-0, following the Stewart extra point try.
Scott City (10-0) scored only once in the second period, that was on a a tw0-yard plunge by Griffith with nine minutes remaining in the first half, and Stewart’s extra point made it 42-0 Beavers at the break.
It only took one play in the third quarter to force a running clock due to at least a 45-point margin in the second half. With 11:46 left in the period, Kropp ran in for a 63-yard score to make it 49-0, which included the Stewart PAT.
In the fourth quarter, Kevin Lozano concluded the scoring with a one-yard run with 11:15 left. Stewart kicked in the extra point to make it 56-0.
With the win, Scott City has now won 10 games for seven straight years, and have now recorded five shutouts in 10 games this season.
For the Beavers, Trey O’Neil was three-of-six for 40 yards, and a touchdown pass to Brett Meyer, who had two catches for 28 yards. Wyatt Kropp had only three carries for 156 yards and two touchdowns, and Cooper Griffith rushed for two scores and 133 yards. Scott City finished with 418 yards of offense, 350 on the ground.
Ellsworth (5-5) saw sophomore Ian Trapp go three-of-13 for 26 yards, with two interceptions. Trapp also rushed for 30 yards on 19 carries. As a team, the Bearcats had only 67 yards of offense.
Up next for Scott City is a trip to Norton to face the Bluejays Saturday afternoon at 2:30 at Travis Field in the Regional round of the Class 3A playoffs. Norton took care of Riley County 49-14 Tuesday night. This will be the first meeting between the two school since 2009.
