Beaver baseball takes two from Lakin
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–In a battle of 5-1 teams on Friday, Lakin and Scott City would not only face each other, but the elements in Scott City. Winds from the north gusting in the 40’s would play a factor for most of the day. In the end, the Beavers would rally with big innings in both games, as they picked up wins of 18-5 and 13-3, in which both were run-rule victories over the Broncs.
Scott City 18, Lakin 5, Game 1
Lakin would get the scoring started with three runs in the first, as Braden Fisher led the scoring with an RBI single to take the early 1-0 lead. The Broncs would score two more runs in the first inning on an error to make the score 3-0. Harrison King would drive in Brady Welker to put the Beavers on the board at 3-1 after the first inning. Lakin added two more runs in the top of the second on a RBI groundout by Jace Bachman and a Matt Morgan single. Scott City would score all the runs the rest of the way. They took the lead thanks to five runs in the second inning, thanks to RBI singles by JP Harris, Harrison King, Brady Welker and Easton Lorg. Kevin Serrono started the two-out scoring rally with an RBI groundout. A four-run third inning was highlighted by King’s two-run single to push the lead to 10-5, and an eight run fourth inning made the score 18-5. The Beavers would get the final three outs in the top of the fifth for the win.
Brady Welker got the win in relief, giving up two hits and striking out two in two innings. JP Harris went three innings, giving up five runs, four earned, on four hits and had seven strikeouts. Harrison King went 3-4 at the plate with 5 RBI, while Brady Weler was 4-4 with four runs driving in. Easton Lorg and KP Harris had three hits and Kevin Serrano drove in three runs. Allen Martinez took the loss for Lakin, going two innings, giving up six runs, one earned, on seven hits. Hunter Davis and Matt Morgan had two hits apiece.
Scott City 13, Lakin 3, Game 2
The finale of the day would go into the sixth inning, and one inning would be the difference. Just like the first game, Lakin would jump out early, leading 2-0 after the first inning, and 3-0 heading into the bottom of the third. Scott City would rally, and rally in a big way in the third inning. The Beavers scored 10 runs, with eight coming with two outs in the bottom of the third. Kevin Serrano provided a big hit that drove in two runs, and before that, Ryan Cure and Blaine Culp delivered RBI singles to put the Beavers ahead. Scott City would send 16 to bat in the inning. They extended their lead in the fourth on a Harrison King RBI single to push the lead to 11-3. Following a scoreless fifth, the Beavers ended the game with two runs in the sixth, thanks to a Brady Welker RBI double and a base hit by JP Harris with the bases loaded.
Harrison King got the win, going five and a third innings, giving up three runs, one earned, on five hits with two strikeouts, and is eligible to pitch on Tuesday, as he officially had 74 pitches. King helped himself out with two RBI and two hits. He drove in seven runs on the day. Brady Welker had three hits and had seven on the day as well. JP Harris also drove in two runs and collected two hits. Lawson Beymer took the loss, giving up nine runs, just one earned, on six hits. Hunter Davis had two hits and Matt Morgan had two RBI for the Broncs.
Scott City is 7-1 and will host Colby Tuesday afternoon in a GWAC doubleheader. Lakin drops to 5-3, and hosts Elkhart on Monday.
