Beaver Baseball drops two from Liberal, TMP
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The schedule for Scott City hasn’t lightened up this year. While Friday’s triangular with Liberal and TMP-Marian saw a couple of losses, there was some growth in their defense. The Beavers would lose to the Redskins 10-0 in their first game, and fall lat to the Monarchs 7-3. Liberal defeated TMP in the middle game 6-4.
The first game of the afternoon saw an all-defensive game for pretty much the first five innings. After a scoreless third inning, Liberal scored a run in the fourth to take a 1-0 lead. Scott City had their issues hitting, collecting only one hit in the game, but left their share of runners in scoring position. The Redskins added a run to push their lead to 2-0 in the fifth inning, then a rain delay for a few minutes occurred in the middle of the fifth. That’s when things went south for Scott City. Liberal sent 11 to the plate in the sixth inning, and scored six runs on five hits to open the game up to 8-0. They added two more in the seventh to make the final 10-0. Sloan Baker pitched well through the first four inning, but ran out of pitches in the fifth. Baker allowed seven runs on eight hits with six strikeouts in five-plus innings of work. Justin Faurot pitched the final two innings, allowing the final three runs of the game. Gustavo Gonzales had the lone hit of the game. Kaiden Bigham allowed a run and struck out six in seven shutout innings to pick up the win. Sylman Pando had three of the Redskins’ 12 hits and Bigham had three RBI. Scott City played much better in their third meeting of the season with the Monarchs on Friday night, than their opening two games of the season with them.
Similar to their game with Liberal, Scott City was very much a part of the game until late with TMP-Marian. Following a scoreless first inning, the Monarchs took advantage of a couple Beaver errors, and led 3-0 through two innings. Scott City took advantage of Sloan Baker’s lead-off single to get on the board in the third inning on a sacrifice RBI by Hunter Braun to pull to within 3-1. TMP plated another run in the fourth, while the Beavers responded with two of their own to get to within 4-3, taking advantage of a couple Monarch errors. After a scoreless fifth and sixth inning, TMP-Marian scored three runs on a couple errors in the seventh inning to pull away late for the 7-3 win. Gustavo Gonzales took the loss for Scott City, going all seven innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits with a strikeout. Sloan Baker and Kyle Cure had four of Scott City’s five hits in the game. Ricky Hockett picked up the win, going four innings, allowing three runs on three hits with eight strikeouts. Chase Romme, Ryan Schippers and Jared Vitztum had two hits each for the Monarchs.
Scott City is now 1-8 on the season, and will be in Great Bend on Tuesday for a triangular with Great Bend and TMP-Marian. The Monarchs are now 7-3 on the season and Liberal is 10-0.
