Bats come to life as Dodge City sweeps doubleheader

Dodge City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Dodge City A’s bounced back after a tough loss Thursday night to pick up a pair of wins on Saturday against the Oklahoma City Indians at Cavalier Field 24-7 and 4-2. Both games went seven innings, thanks to them being a doubleheader.

Game one saw a scoreless game heading into the bottom of the second. Dodge City would get things going with a six-run second, highlighted by a three-run blast by Dayton Cook to go up 6-0 after two innings. Oklahoma City cut the deficit in half in the third, on a three-run home run by Jarred Burch to pull to within 6-3. The A’s would add six runs in the bottom of the third, started off by Conner VanCleave’s lead off home run. Dodge City would also get home runs from Owen Jansen and Carlos Arrellano. The Indians would pull to within 12-5 after 3 1/2 innings, as the A’s added a run in the fourth, three more in the fifth and blew the game open with an eight-run sixth inning to take the 24-7 lead. Oklahoma City scored two runs in the sixth and committed five errors.

Robert Gonzalez went four innings to pick up the win for Dodge City. Dayton Cook went 5-5 at the plate with four RBI and scored three runs. Owen Jansen and Carlos Arrellano had four hits each and drove in two runs. The A’s had 21 hits in the contest.  Andrew Reitmeyer took the loss for Oklahoma City, as he was charged with 11 runs in two innings pitched. The Indians had 10 hits in the game, and were led by Jarred Burch’s 3-3 game with six RBI.

The second game of the night was much tighter, and turned out to be a pitchers battle. Dodge City scored in the first to take the 1-0 lead, which would hold up until the fourth inning, when Oklahoma City tied the game. The A’s took the lead for good, when Daylan Nanny hit a two-run home run over the right field wall to give them a 3-1 lead. He hit that on a full count. The Indians rallied for a run in the sixth to pull to within 3-2, but Dodge City answered back on an Owen Jansen RBI double to push the lead to 4-2. Oklahoma City threatened in the seventh with two runners on base with two outs, but a groundout ended the game, and the A’s completed the doubleheader sweep.

Nico Mayoral went four innings on the mound to get the win, giving up one run on five hits. Daylan Nanny drove in two runs for Dodge City, while Kyle Cullen, Dayton Cook and Owen Jansen had six of the teams eight hits. Marc Woinarowicz picked up the save with a scoreless seventh inning. Case Woodard picked up the loss for Oklahoma City, going 5 2/3 innings, giving up four runs on eight hits. Drew Wright had three hits and Jarred Burch added two for the Indians.

Dodge City improved to 7-6 on the year, and will face Oklahoma City in the series finale will be played Sunday night at 7 at Cavalier Field.
