Great Bend 8, Garden City 1…Garden City 10, Great Bend 6

Being able to split on the road; that’s something that Garden City coach Bill Wilson preached on the days leading up to their season opener in Great Bend. He got his wish.

Mario Montoya and Devan Acker were solid in the finale-combining on a seven hitter in a 10-6 victory.

The pitching combo got plenty of help from the Buffs (1-1, 1-1) six-run outburst in the third inning.

In game one-the Panthers got a magnificent performance from ace Bryce Beck who allowed just four hits in complete-game gem.

“Our pitching is still fairly new at this whole varsity thing,” Wilson said afterwards. “But they bounced back nicely in the second game.”

Ivan Gutierrez took the loss in game one.

“We were able to save some arms for Friday,” Wilson said. “We have another big test coming up going into the weekend.”

Next up: Garden City at No. 8 Wichita Heights-Friday, April 4-4 p.m.
