Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It’s been three years since Scott City has won their own tournament. For the previous two years Liberal has taken home the top trophy in their first two years back in the tournament. On Saturday, the Beavers returned to the top, but not without a final push by Liberal. Scott City took home the 33rd Scott City Wrestling Classic, holding off Liberal by 15.5 points, while Ulysses surged into the third place position. The Beavers have now won their own tournament 20 times, and have placed second nine other times.

Individually, Scott City’s three seniors took home top honors, as Zach Tucker won his second straight tourney title, this one at 113, Abe Wiebe won his first-ever varsity meet at 160, and Cooper Griffith repeated at 195, winning the rematch from last year’s final over Victor Monarrez of Liberal. Ulysses and Holcomb ended up with two individual winners. For the Longhorns, Chance Rodriguez dominated the 170 pound weight division, while Aaron Hernandez took home the title in the wide open 220 pound weight division. As for the Tigers, Mario Rodriguez won his second straight tournament title, avenging a loss from last week, and Austin Ochoa picked up the tournament win at 285.

The fastest pin went to Dalton Hensley of Ellis, who won in :16 seconds in the quarterfinals at 145, and freshman Dayton Porsch of Hoxie was named the tournaments Outstanding Wrestler.
