A’s top Derby in first game of weekend series

Derby, KS(westernkansasnews.com) The Dodge City A’s beat the Derby Twins 4-3 Friday night to start off the weekend series.

Nolan McCarthy got the start for the A’s, while Shannon Broussard started for the Twins. Both pitchers cruised through the first three innings. Dodge City came alive offensively in the fourth inning with an RBI single by Adam Hollar and a walk by Isaiah Haddad scored another run to make it 2-0.

Derby got on the board in the bottom-half when Marques Paige reached on a fielders choic and error by second baseman David Gonzalez to make it 2-1. The Twins would tie the game in the sixth when Wes Anderson on reached on error by center fielder Kyle Cullen to tie the game at 2.

In the seventh inning Seth Gerrardy in his debut with the A’s crushed a two-run homer to center field to make it 4-2. The Twins gave Dodge City a scare in the bottom of ninth,

With runners on first and second and one out Michael Urquidi delivered an RBI double to cut the deficit to 4-3. The A’s then intentionally walked Colton Eager to load the bases with one out. Aaron Beaulaurier hit a grounder to third that allowed Hollar to turn a 5-3 double play for the win.

McCarthy(2-1) got the win for the A’s allowing no earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts. Hunter Shaw pitched two scoreless innings in relief, striking out three and allowing two hits. Brock Knoten picked up his fourth save, pitching the final two-thirds of the ninth.

Gerrardy led Dodge City at the plate going 1-3 with a two-run homer and Adam Hollar was 2-4 with two singles and an RBI.

The A’s(11-9) are back in action Saturday night at Derby. Pregame coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. on 95.5 FM and swksradio.com.
