A’s fall to Derby in series opener
Dodge City, KS(westernkansasnews.com) The Dodge City A’s dropped their series opener to the Derby Twins 12-6 Friday night. The Twins overcame six errors while the A’s committed four of their own.
The A’s jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a two-run single by Isaiah Haddad. The Twins responded with a five run top of the second bolstered by a three-run homer by Zach Smith and an RBI single by Braxton Wehrle. Derby added another run in the third inning on an RBI fielders choice from Toren Craig making 6-2.
In the bottom of the third Kainalu Pitoy drilled a solo homerun to cut the deficit to 6-3 for Dodge City. Adam Hollar had an RBI sac-fly and Jordan Vujovich had an RBI groundout in the fourth to make it 6-5. Then in the fifth Pitoy hit another solo homer, his third in two games, to tie the game at 6-6.
In the top of the sixth inning the Twins responded with an RBI double by Brent Hebert and a three-run homer from Colton Eager to take a 10-6 lead. Derby would add a run in both the seventh and ninth innings on errors.
Robert Gonzalez got the start for the A’s pitching 2.1 innings and allowing six runs on six hits. Daylan Nanny(0-1) got the loss pitching a third of an inning and allowing four runs on four hits. Shannon Broussard(3-0) got the win for the Twins pitching seven innings allowing six runs, three earned on eight hits and four strikeouts.
Zach Smith led the way at the plate for Derby going 2-3 with a homerun, single and three RBI. Colton Eager went 2-5 with a homerun, single and three RBI. Pitoy led the A’s going 2-5 with two homeruns and two RBI.
The A’s will host Derby again on Saturday night. First pitch at 7:30 with the pregame at 7:15 on 95.5 Super Hits and swksradio.com.
