A’s fall to Derby in series finale

Dodge City, KS(westernkansasnews.com) The Dodge City A’s lost to the Derby Twins 11-4 in the series finale Sunday night and lost the series losing two of three. Things fell apart late for the A’s after the game was tied after six innings.

Derby jumped out in front in the first inning with a two out solo homerun by Brent Hebert. The A’s would tie it up in the bottom half on an RBI sac-fly by Dante Faichio. The Twins took the lead back in the second thank to an RBI single Toren Craig to make it 2-1.

Dodge City took their only lead 3-2 in the bottom of the third on a two-run single by Jake Cruce. Derby answered in the fourth on a two-run double by Braxton Wehrle making it 4-3. The A’s tied the game in the sixth with an RBI sac-fly from Owen Jansen.

In the seventh inning things started to unravel for Dodge City. The Twins scored three runs on an RBI single by Houston Parker and a two-run double by Aaron Beaulaurier to take a 7-4 lead. Derby added four runs in the top of the ninth, including an RBI single by Zach Smith and an RBI sac-fly by Braxton Wehrle.

Anthony Villegas(0-1) got the start for the A’s allowing four runs on six hits in six innings. Gabriel Sotomay(0-1) got the loss giving up seven runs on four hits and four walks in 2.1 innings. Kaleb Honea got the win for the Twins pitching three scoreless innings and allowing just one hit.

Aaron Beaulaurier led Derby at the plate going 1-1 with a double, four walks and three RBI. Braxton Wehrle was 1-5 with a double and three RBI. For Dodge City Jake Cruce went 2-3 with a double, single and two RBI. Sunday’s game was also A’s catcher Kainalu Pitoy’s last with the team, he leaves Monday to join the Canadian American Independent League. In eight games Pitoy hit .360 with three homeruns and five RBI.

The A’s return to action Wednesday when they host the Hays Larks at 7:30 p.m. pregame will begin at 7:15 p.m. on Super Hits 95.5 and swksradio.com.
