Area players compete at 3-2-1A State Tennis

Wichita, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The first state championships since the state bowling tournaments in March are taking place this weekend at the state tennis meets across the state. On Friday at the Class 3-2-1A State meet in Wichita, it would be a tough day for the area athletes.

A majority of the area athletes were competing in the doubles division. Three of the four doubles teams fell one round short of advancing to Saturday, with two going head to head.

Ashland’s doubles team of Jackie Amaya/Victoria Milburn would win their first match of the day 6-3, 6-2 over Central Plains’ Jennah Jeffrey/Lauren Oeser, but would drop their quarterfinals match to Isabella Matteucci/Katherine Weiss from Sacred Heart 6-4, 6-2, and fell to Scott City’s Sadie Hermosillo/Bella Myers 9-6.

For Cimarron’s doubles team of Elizabeth Getz, and Emily Getz, they would go 1-2 on the day. They lost their first round match to Brynna Hammeke/Kyla Metro 6-0, 6-2, but turned around to knock off Hayley Hughes/Ashlyn Neufeld from Hutch Trinity 9-5, but fell one match shy from placing, as they lost to Lucy Boyles/Haylee Osner from Conway Springs 9-6.

Scott City saw a tough first round from their doubles teams, but a bounceback in their second matches. Sadie Hermosillo/Bella Myers would drop their opening match to Ellsworth’s Nicole Haase/Maggie Windholz 7-5, 6-3, but bounced back to defeat Ella Bird/Kiley Jargo from the Classical School of Wichita 9-5. They advanced into Saturday by avenging their regional finals loss by knocking off Ashland’s Jackie Amaya/Victoria Milburn 9-6. That guarantees them a top eight finish, and their second straight state placing. For Rhiley Stoppel/Madison Westergard, they would lose to Jaycee Cunningham/Stephanie Soukup from Ellsworth 6-0, 6-4, but turned around to defeat Hillsboro’s Callie Bernhardt/Callie Plenert 9-4, but would fall to Smoky Valley’s JaKarik Elliott/Lena Rauschholz 9-2 to end their tournament run. Lai Mur had a tough draw in Singles play, as she fell to Lily Parin of Sacred Heart 6-0, 6-0, and lost her second and final match to Marysville’s Shea Kramer 9-2.

The only one left to compete is the doubles team of Sadie Hermosillo/Bella Myers for Scott City, as play resumes on Saturday, beginning at 9 at Riverside Tennis Complex in Wichita.
