Alta Brown Elementary Plans Opening of Student Run Credit Union 

Garden City, KS(westernkansasnews.com) Alta Brown Elementary School and Golden Plains Credit Union will hold a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday, September 25th, at 8:25 a.m. to officially open the Golden Dragon Credit Union at the school.  The event will be held during an all school assembly in the school’s gymnasium, 1110 E. Pine Street.  The student run credit union will provide an opportunity for students to learn how a business functions and for students to learn financial knowledge.

The goal of this partnership is to establish a student-operated financial institution, teaching academics to students through real-life experiences, by introducing students to the job force, and encouraging students to save for their future.  This partnership models the structure of how a business operates by requiring 4th graders to complete a job application for various positions that they will work at the credit union.
