All-WAC Basketball and Wrestling Selections for Garden City and Dodge City

Garden City, KS (www.westernkansasnews.com) – After having stellar seasons the Garden City High School Basketball and Wrestling teams were well represented on the All-Western Athletic Conference honors for the 2012-2013 winter sports season. The Dodge City Red Demons received a number of selections in both boys Basketball and Wrestling.

The Red Demon boys basketball team placed Jace Larson to the All-WAC first team and Coach Dennis Hamilton was selected as Coach of the Year. Dodge City won the Conference title again this year with a 6-1 record and finished the season at 13-8, losing in the Sub-State Championship game to rival Garden City 40-37. The Dodge City Wrestling team had three grapplers chosen on the All-Wac team, with Jade McRoberts, Clay Weil and 6A State Champion as 138 pounds senior Dane Edwards.

The Garden City Lady Buffs had junior Taryn Tempel selected first All-WAC and selected as Player of the Year. Sophomore Jayme Bernbeck was also chosen first team All-WAC and senior Johna McClelland received honorable mention. Coach David Upton in his 6th season for the Lady Buffs was chosen Coach of the Year, after his team finished the season undefeated WAC Champions for the first time in school history and earned their best record ever at 17-4. For the Buffalo boys senior Bo Banner was the lone player from Garden City named All-WAC first team, junior point guard Tristin Nanninga received honorable mention. The Buffalo boys finished the season at 15-8 and the made the 6A State Tournament for the first time since 2007, the Buffs lost to Derby 55-46 in the first round.

For the 6A State Champion Garden City High School Wrestling team earning first team All-WAC status includes: Michael Prieto, Tevin Briscoe, Trevor Kennedy, Chris Adler, Juan Carlos Rodriguez and Montana Fuller. The Buffaloes Honorable mention selections included: Matt Urritia, Alec Castillo, A.J. Hurtadoc, Zac Finch, Anthony Gardner, Sammy Reyes and Samason Aldaco. Coach Carlos Prieto in is first season was selected as Coach of the Year. Garden City has now won 8 Wrestling Titles in school history, seven of them coming in the decade of the 90’s.
