Abilene, Rose Hill dominate 4A Regionals; 16 area wrestlers qualify for state

Saturday saw four, Class 4A schools in southwest Kansas make the trip east in hopes of qualifying several wrestlers for state in Salina. Scott City would go to the Abilene regional, while Holcomb, Hugoton and Ulysses made their way to Rose Hill.

In Abilene, Scott City qualified six wrestlers for state and finish third as a team. Abilene dominated the field, pushing 10 through to state, as they scored 230 points to easily win the regional, while Colby was second with 166.5 points, qualifying nine wrestlers for state, and Scott City was third with 131.5 points. The Beavers had two regional champions in Trenton Frank at 126 and Matthew Wheeler at 150. Blaze Gossman was second at 165. Alex Rodriguez placed third at 138, while Kasey Rohrbough at 113 and Tyler Roberts at 144 placed fourth. Abilene Coach Jake Stout was named KWCA Regional Coach of the Year, while it was a tie for the KWCA Regional Wrestler of the Year with Murphy Rudolph of Abilene and Cruz Hershberger of Buhler.

In Rose Hill, the defending 4A State Champions dominated on their home mat, winning with 258 points and qualified 12 for state, while Winfield was second with 152.5 points, pushing eight wrestlers through to state, and Andale was third with 142.5 points, qualifying six to state. Ulysses was sixth with five wrestlers qualifying, Hugoton ninth with three qualifying wrestlers, and Holcomb was 14th with two punching their ticket to state. The Tigers had three, third place finishers in Sebastian Heredia at 138, Jaxsen Salinas at 144 and Preston Hittle at 150. Placing fourth were Dominic Sanchez at 113 and Roman Romero at 125. Hugoton got a third place finisher in Isaiah Peachey at 113, and a pair of fourth place finishes from Von Grubbs at 175 and Daniel Tinoco at 215. The Longhorns got two fourth place finishes from Haegen Hartman at 132 and Javid Corral at 150.

The Class 4A State Wrestling Tournament will be in Salina at the Tony’s Pizza Events Center this Friday & Saturday, beginning at 9 am. They will run six mats, with three being the boys tournament and the other three the girls tournament.
