Ulysses sweeps Scott City to open softball season

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It was the season opener in Scott City for both the Lady Beavers and the Ulysses Tigers Tuesday afternoon, as the teams would have to battle strong wind gusts throughout the doubleheader. In the end, the Lady Tigers would win both games, taking the first game 19-3, and the finale 22-10.

Ulysses 19, Scott City 3, Game 1
While neither team was able to score in the first two innings, they would leave runners in scoring position. The third inning saw Ulysses take over and never look back. They scored the first two runs of the game on a two-out, two-run error that put them up 2-0. An Addi Harbor two-run double woudl extend their lead in the third to 4-0, and eventually they would lead 7-0 going in to the bottom of the fourth. Scott City got on the board in the bottom of the frame, thanks to a past ball that scored Hayla Edwards. Both teams traded runs in the fifth inning, and Ulysses would add two runs in the sixth, and blow the game wide open in the seventh with nine runs, thanks to a pair of two-run singles. The Lady Beavers added a run in the bottom of the seventh to make the final 19-3.

Addi Harbor went 3-6 and drove in five runs driven in, while Jovi Hause had four RBI in the opener. Arbor struck out 14 in the cirgle, giving up three runs, one earned, on four hits. Kaylee Felker had a hit and an RBI for Scott City. Baylee Wolkensdorfer surrendered 19 runs, seven earned on nine hits, and collected nine strikeouts, but gave up 14 walks in the loss.

The second game would remain tight through the first three innings. Ulysses picked up from where they left off with three runs in the first inning. Addi Harbor would drive in two of their runs on a double. However, Scott City responded with two in the bottom of the frame, thansk to a Peyton Gentry RBI groundout and a Kaylee Felker infield single. A Baylee Wolkensdorfer RBI groundout tied the game at three in the second, and the score would remain that way until the fourth inning. In the top of the fourth inning, the Lady Beavers would commit two errors, in which Ulysses would take advantage by scoring four runs to take a 7-3 lead. Three more errors in the fifth by Scott City helped extend the Lady Tiger lead to 11-3. In the bottom of the fifth, Scott City would get their first home run of the season on an Ava Deines two-run blast over the center field fence to pull to within 11-5. Ulysses would blow the game open in the sixth with eight runs, and took advantage of three more errors. They would get a grand slam from Harbor in the inning. The Lady Beavers responded with five runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth to pull to within 19-10, only to see the Lady Tigers score three more in the seventh to make the final 22-10.

Addi Harbor would go 5-6 with 10 RBI in game two and score twice, while Devany Vitolas and Clarissa Sianuqui added three hits. Harbor struck out eight in game two, while giving up 10 runs, three earned, on 10 hits. Ava Deines had three RBI in game two while Crissa Irvin had three hits and scored three runs. Deines gave up 22 runs, seven earned, on 17 hits and struck out two in the circle.

Scott City will travel to Garden City to face the Buffaloes on Thursday. The game was moved up from Friday. Ulysses will play at Lakin on Thursday.
