Dodge City Community College wins region tournament, qualifies for national tournament

The Dodge City Community College women’s basketball team clinched an automatic berth in the NJCAA national tournament after winning the region tournament championship on Saturday against Coffeyville. The 55-35 win secured the first region VI title in program history.

The Conquistadors dominated the game defensively, holding Coffeyville to just 22.9% from the field, and turning them over 22 times.

Offensively, they were led in scoring by sophomore forward Mia Jordan, who scored 12 points to go along with her seven rebounds. Sophomore forward Shorna Preston had six points, nine rebounds and eight assists in the win.

Now the focus shifts to Casper, Wyoming for the team, as they play their first game at the national tournament on Thur. March 27. The Conquistadors’ 29-4 record earned them the No. 4 seed, meaning they have a first round bye. They will await the winner of No.13 seed Arizona Western and No. 20 seed State Fair Community College.
