North Platte Boys, Norton Girls win J.R. Durham Invitational titles

Norton, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The annual J.R. Durham Invitational wrestling tournament kicked off the tournament run on Friday and Saturday in Norton. Teams from Kansas and Nebraska would hit the mat, as the girls competed on Friday and the boys took to the mats on Saturday.

On Friday, the Norton girls would edge Lexington, NE for the tournament title, while on Saturday, North Platte, NE would pull away in the finals to win over Norton.

The girls on Friday saw Norton take the team title, while Lexington was second and Scott City came in third. Norton would have four individual champions, including the Outstanding Wrestler recipient, Halle Pfannenstiel, who won the 140-pound weight class. Lexington was second, winning three weight classes. The Lady Beavers placed third, as Tatum Brown won the 135-pound weight class.

Saturday’s wrestling was very competitive, as North Platte would pull away to win the tournament over Norton. Colby placed third, while Scott City was fifth. The Bulldogs won three weight classes, while the runner-up Bluejays won two weights and third place Colby won one weight class. Scott City did not have an individual champion, but had two finalists, as Tyler Roberts and Matthew Wheeler were second at 144 and 150 respectively. Beloit’s Brogan Monty was voted the boys tournaments Outstanding Wrestler.
