Dodge City High School’s boys’ basketball escaped with a 66-63 road win over Garden Plain on Wednesday night, improving to 3-4 on the season.

The first quarter ended with the score tied at 14, but the Red Demons outscored the Owls 16-12 in the second quarter. Junior guard Nathan Shulte was leading the way at the intermission with eight points on two made 3’s. The pair 3’s were the only made shots from distance for Dodge City in the first half, finishing 2-of-12.

The shots started to fall more in the second half, as the Demons finished 8-of-23 from deep to end the night.

The story of the game was the full court pressure that Dodge City was able to apply onto Garden Plain. The Demons came away with 10 steals including three from sophomore guard Cru Lembright.

After the Demons started the fourth quarter down by four, junior guard Ty Scheck had a big sequence that put the Demons in the driver’s seat for the rest of the night. Scheck first made a three, and after his teammates were able to trap the Garden Plain ball handler, who had his pass out of the trap stolen by Scheck for an easy layup. Scheck’s night finished with 11 points and five assists on just seven field goal attempts.

The Demons were led in scoring by Lembright (15) but had Shulte (11) and sophomore guard Elliot Williams (10) in double figures as well.

The Owls battled back and got two looks at a game-tying three, but were unable to convert as the Demons survived the last possession. Garden Plain was led by Kaeden Kasselman, who scored 21 points and grabbed 15 rebounds.

The Demons will be back in the fieldhouse for the first time since Dec. 17 on Friday night when they host an undefeated Cheney squad.
