Goodland sweeps Scott City

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Scott City would return home on Tuesday night for their GWAC opener, as they faced the Goodland Cowboys and Cowgirls in a pair of big early season tests. It would be a tough night for the Beavers as a last minute rally fell short for the girls in a 43-41 Cowgirl win, while the Goodland boys never trailed in a 64-43 victory.

Goodland Girls 43, Scott City 41
Scott City would control the first half, and Goodland controlled the second half. It felt eerily similar a the last time the teams met up in Scott City, when the Cowgirls would trail for a majority of the night and storm back for the win. The Lady Beavers would take a 9-7 lead in to the second quarter, as they opened up an 18-9 lead with 4:46 left before halftime. Goodland (4-1, 2-0 GWAC) would pull to within 20-14 late in the first half, before Scott City scored the final four points of the half to lead 24-14 at the break. To open the second half, the Cowgirls would turn up the intensity on the defensive end, that led to an offensive outburst. They would go on a 17-2 run over the first seven-plus minutes of the third quarter to lead 31-26, before settling for a 31-28 lead heading in to the fourht quarter. The Lady Beavers would have five turnovers early in the second half that aided the Cowgirl comeback. Scott City (2-3, 0-1) had their chances against the No. 8 team in Class 3A, but miscues would hinder their efforts. Goodland maintained the lead by no more than four points in the final two minutes and held on for the 43-41 win.

Lauren Linton would pour in a career-high 16 points for Goodland, while Hope Biermann added 12 points. They were 14-26 from the foul line and ended with 13 turnovers. Scott City got 12 points from Megan Trout, as they were 14-23 from the free throw line. The Lady Beavers committed 21 turnovers.

With the win, Goodland has won nine straight against Scott City, and 10 of the last 11 games in the series since 2020.

Goodland Boys 64, Scott City 43
Goodland would control the game from the opening tip, besides the two ties early in the first quarter. The Cowboys had a 16-12 lead after the first quarter, and would go on to score the first 14 points of the second quarter to lead 30-12 with 5:17 left before the half. Scott City ended a five-minute drought with a basket, and scored five straight points before a three-pointer by Goodland (5-0, 2-0 GWAC) gave them a 33-17 hafltime lead. To open the second half, the Cowboys would score 13 of the first 18 points to lead 46-22 with 2:41 left in the third qurater. Scott City (4-1, 0-1) had a hard time trying to get a rally going all night, as the No. 9 team in Class 3A was unable to score more than five straight points all night. Goodland’s lead grew to 26 in the fourth quarter, before the No. 2 team in 3A settled for a 64-43 win.

Brady Brumbaugh would pour in a career-high 33 poitns for Goodland, while Braylon Mull added 10. The Cowboys went 7-11 from the charity line and had seven turnovers. Scott City got 13 points from Jackson Rumford, as the Beavers went 7-10 from the foul line and had 18 turnovers.

With the win, Goodland has won four of the last five in the series.
