Scott City visits Colby to wrap up regular season

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It’s hard to believe that the regular season finale has arrived. Scott City will look to wrap up an undefeated district slate as they head to Colby to face the Eagles at Dennen Field.

Scott City has already clinched the Class 3A, District 8 title, as they improved to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in district play, following a 48-9 win at home against Goodland last Friday night. The Beavers put up 439 yards of offense, with 335 coming on the ground. In the win, the Cowboys scored first, before Scott City rolled up 29 straight points, taking a 29-3 halftime lead. Both Cayden Couchman and Camden Vulgamore had three touchdowns, as they both had two rushing scores and Vulgamore had a passing score to Couchman in the win. The Beaver defense gave up 182 yards of offense, holding Goodland to minus-19 rushing yards. This year, Scott City is scoring around 35 points per game and averaging over 350 yards of offense, while allowing nine points and 200 yards per game. Vulgamore passed the 800-yard mark in passing yards last week, and has seven touchdown tosses, and six rushing scores this year. Couchman has just under 500 rushing yards and seven scores and has two receiving touchdowns this year. Oscar Mendez leads the team in tackles with 56.

Colby started out the season 4-0, but has dropped three straight games, including a 22-14 home loss to Lakin in non-district play last Friday night. The Eagles are 1-3 in District 8. Lakin led throughout, as Colby’s game-tying drive fell short. The Eagles threw for 182 yards and passed for 151 yards in the loss, and held Lakin to 212 yards, with 208 coming on the ground. The Broncs dominated the time of possession. This year through seven games, Casen Carroll has passed for over 1,500 yards and 12 touchdowns, as Kasey Giesenhagen, Brayden Foss and Guy Tubbs have three touchdown receptions each. Colby averages 20 points and just over 300 yards of offense per contest, while giving up 21 points and just under 300 yards per game.

Scott City is guaranteed a home playoff game and a top four seed next Friday in the opening round of the playoffs. They will have a seed, ranging form a two to a four seed. Colby could finish as high as third in the district with a win and a Goodland loss to Hugoton. A Colby loss and a Goodland loss would see a three-way tie for the final two playoff spots between Colby, Goodland and Hugoton, with the total points determining the final spots. A Goodland win eliminates Hugoton from playoff contention. Holcomb will finish second in District 8, as they are finished with district play.
