Scott City hosts Goodland in District 8 matchup

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It’s hard to believe how fast the season is going. Tonight is senior night for Scott City, as they host the Goodland Cowboys in a game that still has quite a few implications on the Class 3A, District 8 race.

Goodland enters with a 4-2 record overall, 1-1 in District 8 play, after a 40-7 thrashing of longtime rival Colby last Friday night at home. It’s the first time since 2013 they have won at least four games in a season. The Cowboys led 20-7 at the break, and scored two quick touchdowns in the third quarter to put the game away. They would pass for 308 yards and had 412 yards of offense in the win, and held the Eagles to 177 yards of offense. Goodland has scored at least 21 points in every game this year. They have doubled their win total from last year, and average 38 points per game and 328 yards of offense, while allowing 23 points and over 250 yards per game. Linkon Cure has 10 receiving touchdowns and 568 receiving yards, whiel Jaxson Miller has eight receiving scores. Zach Thorson has thrown for 20 touchdowns and 1364 yards.

Scott City picked up a 9-0 win at Holcomb last Friday night in a defensive battle, to improve to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in Distrcit 8 play. The Beavers would take a 3-0 lead on the final play of the first half on a Jackson Rumford 37-yard field goal, and scored on a 47-yard pass play from Camden Vulgamore to Kelton Cook in the third quarter for the scoring. They were able to hold the Longhorns on three straight turnover on downs in the fourth quarter in the victory. Scott City had 208 yards of offense, with 147 coming on the ground, and gave up 253 yards of offense in the win. They forced three turnovers, all on interceptions. This year, the Beavers have scored an average of 32 points and average over 350 yards of offense, while giving up just over 200 yards of offense and 10 points per game. Camden Vulgamore has passed for 718 yards and six touchdowns while rushing for four, while Kelton Cook has rushed for nearly 400 yards and four touchdowns. Jackson Rumford has over 250 receiving yards and five touchdowns this year.

Scott City has won 20 straight in the series dating back to 2005, and have series lead of 41-11. The Beavers won 58-14 last year. Goodland last won in 2003.

If Scott City wins, they will win the district title. A Goodland win would put three teams with at least two wins, and the Cowboys would have a chance of hosting a playoff game.
