Holcomb hosts Scott City in big district matchup

Holcomb, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Every time you see Holcomb and Scott City match up, you know it’s going to be a battle. This year should be no exception, as the last two unbeatens in Class 3A, District 8 meet up at Holcomb High School for a 7 pm kickoff.

Scott City put together a complete game with a 50-0 over Hugoton last Friday night at Darner Field to open district play. The Beavers used a 21-point second quarter to blow the game open, and led 28-0 at the break. While they had 345 yards of offense, they were able to limit the Eagles to under 80 total yards in the win, as well as forcing two turnovers and blocking a punt that was returned for a touchdown. Kelton Cook had 173 yards and a pair of scores in the win. This year, Scott City is averaging 37 points and just under 400 yards of offense, while allowing just under 200 yards of offense, and 11 points per contest. Camden Vulgamore is just shy of 600 passing yards with five touchdown passes and four rushing scores, while Kelton Cook has just under 400 rushing yards to lead a balanced ground attack, and Jackson Rumford is over 200 receiving yards.

Holcomb feasted on two early Colby Eagle turnovers and put up 21 first quarter points, en route to a 41-7 win last Friday night on the road. The Longhorns scored the games first 35 points of the game, and rolled up 461 yards of offense, with 292 coming on the ground. Defensively, they allowed just 220 yards of offense, with a bulk of it coming through the air. This year, Holcomb is scoring 32 points and averaging just under 380 yards of offense, while allowing 19 points and under 300 yards of offense to opponents. The Longhorns have won four straight, as Keegan Johnson has passed for under 1,000 yards and eight touchdowns, while Korbin Johnson is near 650 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns and Coopoer Cranston has five receiving touchdowns this year.

Both teams enter 4-1 on the season, as Holcomb is 2-0 in district play, and Scott City is 1-0.

This will be the 26th meeting in the series, with Scott City holding a 20-5 record, including winning the last three games. Holcomb has won three of the last four held at Holcomb High School. This will be the first time since 2020 the game is in Holcomb.
