Scott City blanks Hugoton

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Scott City and Hugoton entered with 3-1 records on Friday night at Darner Field, as the two teams looked to get their first district win of the season. On homecoming night, the Beavers would not be denied, as they would shut out the Eagles 50-0 to pick up their fourth win of the season.

The Beavers would take advantage of short field on their opening series, going four plays and 52 yards. Camden Vulgamore found Kevin Wiebe from 29 yards out to give Scott City an early 7-0 lead with the Jackson Rumford extra point.

For a second straight week, the Beavers would put the game away in the second quarter. Their first score of the second period came with 8:23 left before halftime, as Vulgamore connected on a seven-yard pass to Cayden Couchman on third down to extend the lead to 14-0, with the Rumford extra point. Scott City’s third score of the game would be on special teams. At the 3:51 mark of the second quarter, it was a 25-yard punt block return by Case Armendariz, after Cayden Couchman blocked the punt. Rumford’s extra point extended the lead to 21-0. It was Scott City’s 21st non-offensive touchdown since 2013. The Beavers weren’t done yet. They would take advantage of good field position, as Kelton Cook, the homecoming king, took the jet sweep left, broke a tackle, and scored from 40 yards out with 1:34 left before halftime to extend the lead to 28-0 after the extra point kick by Rumford.

It took just one play for Scott City (4-1) to find the end zone in the third quarter. On the opening play of the second half, Cook would score from 80 yards out to extend the lead to 34-0. Couchman scored on a four-yard run with 8:57 remaining in the third stanza to extend the lead to 41-0 with the Rumford kick.

In the fourth quarter, the Beavers scored on a high snap by Hugoton (3-2) that went out of the end zone on a punt attempt with 11:57 left to go up 43-0. The second team would score on third and eight, on a 28-yard pass from Drew Metzger to Adan Tarango to make the final 50-0 with the Junior Meza kick.

Scott City rolled up 345 yards of offense, including 252 on the ground. Kelton Cook had a career-high 173 yards on seven carries and two touchdowns. Camdne Vulgamroe was 5-12 for 65 yards and two touchdown passes. Kevin Wiebe had 29 receiving yards on one catch.

For Hugoton, they had 79 yards, with 61 yards coming on the ground. Isai Gurdado had 39 yards on 11 carries. Miguel Hernandez was 2-7 passing for 18 yards with an interception. Jair Saldana had both receptions.

With the win, Scott City has now won 13 straight in the series, and now lead 35-10-1 all-time. The 50-0 win was the second most lopsided game since the Beavers shut out Hugoton 51-0 in 1993.

Scott City is now 4-1 overall, 1-0 in Class 3A, District 8 play, as they will head to Holcomb next Friday night. The Longhorns picked up a 41-7 road win at Colby to improve to 4-1 overall, 2-0 in district play. Hugoton drops to 3-2 overall, 0-2 in district play, as they will step out of district play next Friday and hosts Cimarron. The Bluejays picked up their first win of the year with a 33-8 win over Larned.
