Scott City bounces back in win over Hoisington
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Both Scott City and Hoisington were in unfamiliar territory on Friday night, looking to pick up a week three win and take momentun into the next week. It would be the Beavers who took the early momentum, and withstood a second half charge from the Cardinals, as they picked up a 29-7 win to pick up their second win of the season.
While Scott City didn’t score on their opening drive, they were able to chew up over four minutes of the opening drive. Their second drive would be a 47-yard drive on nine plays, capped off by a Cayden Couchman four-yard run with 1:36 remaining in the opening frame to go up 6-0, with a missed extra point.
Following a Hoisington punt in the second quarter, it was a quick two-play drive for the Beavers. A 77-yard touchdown pass from Camden Vulgamore to Alex Tarango put Scott City 12-0, and the two-point conversion failed. Following a turnover on downs by the Cardinals, the Beavers would run off three mintues, and settle for a Jackson Rumford 35-yard field goal with 3:20 remaining in the half to extend the lead to 15-0. Scott City wasn’t done. It would take them just two plays without a timeout to score again, as Vulgamore found Jackson Rumford for 46 yards to extend the lead to 22-0 with 36 seconds left before halftime on the Rumford kick.
Hoisington (0-3) started off the second half with the momentum. The Cardinals were aided by a pair of 15-yard penalties, as they went down the field 91 yards on six plays, and got a Rhen Galla nine-yard run wiht 9:23 left in the third quarter, as Tayven Morales booted in the extra point to make it 22-7. Scott City would march downfield but their drive would end up with an interception. Following a three-and-out, the Beavers would get the ball back, but fumble on fourth down and the Cardinals would get good field position at their own 42 yard line.
A drive of 6:46 saw Hoisington get stopped on fourth and five at the Beaver six yard line. The drive woudl last 15 plays. Scott City (2-1) delivered the final dagger on a 13-play, 94-yard drive that took 6:30 off the clock. Vulgamore rushed it in from four yards out with 2:12 left, and the Rumford PAT made the final 29-7.
Scott City had a season-high 438 yards of offense, with 259 on the ground and 179 through the air. Camden Vulgamore was 10-15 passing wwon h two touchdlwns, as Alex Tarango had 113 yards on five receptions. Vulgamore had 91 yards on the ground on 17 carries and a touchdown. Hoisington ended up wiht 238 yards, with 228 on the ground Taylen Morales had 105 yards on 14 carries.
Scott City has won four straight over Hoisington, and have a 12-4 series lead all time against the Cardinals. It was Scott City’s first week three win since 2019. Hoisington is 0-3 for the first time since 2003.
The Beavers will have their final non-district game at Ulysses next Friday night. The Tigers are 0-3 after their 42-16 loss at Holcomb. Hoisington will be at Southwestern Heights to beign district play next Friday.
