Scott City shuts out Cimarron

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It didn’t take long for Scott City to get on the scoreboard in 2024. In fact, 12 seconds is all it would take, as Brooks Bailey took the opening kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown, as the Beavers never looked back in a 35-0 win over the Cimarron Bluejays on Military Appreciation Night at Darner Field.

Bailey’s kickoff return to open the game would be the first kickoff return for a touchdown since Parker Gooden’s 88-yard kickoff return against Beloit in 2019. Jackson Rumford knocked in the extra point to give Scott City the early 7-0 lead. The Beavers would score two more times in the first quarter. Their first drive was capped off on a Kelton Cook one-yard roun with 7:56 left in the opening quarter to push the lead to 14-0 with the Rumford kick. Following another Cimarron three-and-out, Scott City went 52 yards on five plays for their third score of the quarter. Cayden Couchman scored from seven yards out with 4:03 left in the first quarter to push the Beaver lead to 21-0 with the Rumford PAT.

On their second drive of the second quarter, the Beavers added another score. On his first carry of the season, Kevin Wiebe found paydirt from one yard out with 8:37 left in the second quarter to extend the lead to 28-0 with the Rumford extra point. The drive was set up by a Couchman interception that set the drive up at the Bluejay 14.

Scott City’s offense would sputter in the third quarter, as there would not be any scoring. They would go three-and-out after Cimarron went 12 plays on their opening drive of the second half that was halted by a Brodie Holstein interception. The second Beaver drive following a Camden Vulgamore interception near midfield was ended on a missed field goal after driving in to the red zone.

In the fourth quarter, Scott City (1-0) put together a six-play, 77-yard drive, that saw Cook finish the drive off with a 16-yard run with 7:45 left. Rumford’s extra point would finish the scoring at 35-0. Both teams traded possessions twice to close the game, as the Beavers picked up the 35-0 win.

It was a balanced attack on the ground for Scott City, as no one would carry the ball more than eight times. Camden Vulgamore had five carries for 58 yards, while Cayden Couchman had eight carries for 49 yards and a touchdown. The Beavers would rush for 202 yards. Camden Vulgamore was 8-17 passing for 91 yards. Jackson Rumford was the leading target with four receptions for 36 yards. Scott City finished with 301 yards of offense.

Trace Kopper had 19 carries for 41 yards, as Cimarron (0-1) finished with 60 yards on the ground. Kopper threw for 57 yards and three interceptions on 9-23 passing. Isayah Barranca had three catches for 24 yards, and the Bluejays finished with 132 yards of offense.

With the win, Scott City has won eight straight season-openers and 16 of their last 17. It’s their third win in the series against Cimarron, as they now hold a 17-7 edge in the all-time series.

Scott City will travel to Wray to take on the Eagles next Friday. Wray scored 42 unanswered points in a 56-21 win over Goodland, as they are now 2-0 on the season. Cimarron hosts Holcomb, who is also 0-1, following a 38-7 loss at Cheney.
