Lady Beaver volleyball splits matches in Oakley

Oakley, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The season opener for the Scott City Lady Beaver volleyball team once again took them to Oakley on Friday for a triangular with Oakley and Wallace County. Every match in the triangular would go to three sets. Scott City would win their first match over Wallace County 25-19, 16-25, 27-25 and fell to Oakley 25-16, 14-25, 25-17. Oakley defeated the Lady Wildcats 25-14, 23-25, 28-26 in the opening match of the triangular.

Against Wallace County, the Lady Beavers would start out slow, trailing 14-8 midway through the set. Scott City would go on a 10-1 run to build an 18-15 lead. Leading 22-19, the Lady Beavers closed out the set with three straight for the win 25-19. In set two, it would be the Lady Wildcats who got the early edge by a score of 8-2. They never looked back, as they continued to keep Scott City at arm’s length, before taking the set 25-16. In the final set, it would go back and forth with six ties and two lead changes. Both teams would have a pair of runs of four straight. After Wallace County tied the third set at 12, the Lady Beavers built their lead to 18-13. However, the Lady Wildcats never gave up. Trailing 22-18, Wallace County ran together four straight to tie the set at 22. Scott City had match point at 24-22, but couldn’t get the final point. The Wildcats tied it at 24, and at 25. A kill would close it out for the Lady Beavers at 27-25. Piper Fox would collect five kills and two block points for Scott City, while Avery Lewis had four kills and two service aces. Megan Trout had five blocks in the win.

In the finale of the night, all three sets would end up lopsided. The Lady Beavers had an early 3-1 lead, before a run of four of the next five put Oakley up 5-4. After Scott City would tie the set at 5, the Lady Plainsmen used a 7-2 run to build a 12-7 lead. The Lady Beavers got to within 12-11, but Oakley would get into a groove and go on a 12-2 run to lead 22-13. Both teams would score three points apiece, as the Plainsmen won the opening set 25-16. The second set would be controlled by Scott City for the vast majority. Leading 6-5, the Lady Beavers put together an 8-3 run to build a 14-8 lead. The closest Oakley could get would be 14-11 halfway through, as Scott City closed the set on an 11-3 run to win convincingly 25-14. The Lady Beavers led for most of the third set. They took a 16-12 lead and looked like they would come out with a win. A barrage of hitting errors by Scott City would help Oakley go on a run, and a big run they would have. Their first lead of the third set was at 18-17, as they ended the set and the match on a 13-1 run to take the final set 25-17. Mckenzie Megzger had seven kills for Scott City, while Megan Trout had four kills, and Kendall Gentry added three kills and two aces.

Scott City is 1-1 on the season, as they will compete in the Maroon & Gold Invitational in Hays on Saturday. In pool play, they’ll face Hays High, TMP Marian and Wichita Southeast in pool play.
