Holcomb boys, Goodland girls, repeat as GWAC Track & Field champions

Holcomb, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Thursday saw all seven schools make their way to Holcomb for the annual Great West Activities Conference meet. It would be the final tune up before next week’s regional competition on what turned out to be one of the nicest days of competition this spring.

The meet would see a pair of repeat champions, as the Holcomb boys and the Goodland girls would win the team titles.

Starting off with the boys side, Holcomb put up 191 points, which would be the most for a team in a GWAC meet, followed by Scott City’s 132 and Hugoton was third with 55. Scott City’s Camden Vulgamore took the Pole Vault, broke the school record in the 400M Dash, and also picked up a gold on the winning 4x400M Relay. Holcomb got big performances from Brody Deniston, who won the 800 and 1600-meter runs. He broke the meet record in the 1600-meter run. The Longhorns also got two wins from Drayton Knoll in the Discus and Shot Put. 

On the girls side. It came down to the end, as Goodland would squeak out a one-point win over Colby at 121-120, and Cimarron came in third wiht 103 points. Cimarron’s Janae Fugitt took the 800, 1600 and 3200-meter runs. Holcomb’s Madyson Schreibvogel was a double winner, taking the 200 and 400-meter dashes.
