Scott City baseball picks up two wins over Ulysses to close regular season

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Both Scott City and Ulysses were jockeying for position in the Class 4A, West standings on Thursday, as they met up for a GWAC doubleheader in Scott City. The Beavers would get the best of the Tigers to close out the regular season, with wins of 3-1 and 10-0.

In the opener, the game would be scoreless for the first three innings, until the fourth inning, where Scott City would put three runs on the board. Brady Welker’s two-run double broke the scoreless tie, and Brooks Bailey’s RBI double extended the lead to 3-0. In the sixth, Carsen Walker would put Ulysses on the board with an RBI single to pull to within 3-1, which would be the final. 

Eloy Ruelas got the win, giving up a run on two hits in 6 2/3 innings. Brady Welker had two hits and two RBI for the Beavers. Armani Ysac took the loss, allowing three runs on four hits, and struck out 10 in six innings of work. Carsen Walker had a hit and RBI for the Tigers.

The finale belonged to Scott City on Senior Night. After taking a 1-0 lead into the fourth inning, the Beavers blew the game open with eight runs in the inning, and pushed a run across in the fifth to win by run rule 10-0. In theat fourth inning, Aaron Armendariz had a two-run triple and the scoring was closed by Spencer Cramer in the bottom of the fifth with two outs. 

Spencer Cramer got the win, going five innings, scattering five hits and struck out four. Brady Welker had three hits, while Avery Radke, Cramer and Aaron Armendariz drove in two runs. Alex Navarrete took the loss, giving up five runs, four earned, on six hits in 3 1/3 innings pitched. Armani Ysac had two of the teams five hits. 

Scott City closed the regular season with eight straight wins, and are now 13-5 overall. They finished in a tie for second place with Colby in the GWAC standings with an 8-4 record. Ulysses finished 12-8 overall, and 7-5 in league play. 

The Beavers are projected to be the sixth seed in the Class 4A Regional, as they are projected to face Circle in the semi-final in Clay Center. Ulysses is projected to be the 10th seed, and will likely face Wellington in Pratt in the semi-finals. Brackets are expected to be out by Saturday morning. Abilene will be the top seed, followed by Pratt, Clay Center and McPherson. The top four seeds will host a regional.
