Holcomb Girls, Scott City Boys Take GWAC Victories
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Tuesday night was Senior Parent Recognition Night at Scott Community High School, as three of the four teams that took the court were ranked in Class 3A. After a tight battle throughout the No. 7 team in the state Holcomb was able to pull away late against a pesky Lady Beaver squad 66-50, while the top team in the state Scott City ran way from the No. 10 team in 3A Longhorn team 75-50.
The second meeting of the season between Holcomb and Scott City on the girls side was much different than their January 8 matchup in a 62-31 Lady Longhorn rout. Three ties and six lead changes occurred throughout the night, as Holcomb ended the first quarter on a 10-0 run to take a 12-8 lead. That was before the Lady Beavers jumped out to an 8-2 lead on an 8-0 run. Both teams scored 14 second quarter points, as the Lady Longhorns took a 26-22 halftime advantage. Scott City made an 8-0 to retake the lead in the third period at 32-31 with 4: 42 remaining, and that would be their final lead of the night. Holcomb countered with 15 unanswered points, and led 48-39 after three quarters. In the final period, the Lady Beavers were only able to get to within 50-44 about halfway through, as the Lady Longhorns pulled away on a 16-6 run down the stretch to stay atop the league race. Holcomb (14-4, 7-1 GWAC) had two players in double figures, led by Katie Pfeifer with 23, 20 in the second half, and Karissa Pena added 20. Scott City (3-15, 2-6) was paced by their two seniors in their final home game, as Janessa Lownethal finished with 19, and Shanaya Hoeme pitched in 16.
In a battle of two top 10 teams in Class 3A, Scott City wasted little time to take down Holcomb. The Beavers started by scoring the first seven points of the. Despite an early disadvantage, the Longhorns were able to pull to within 10-9 with 3:14 remaining in the opening period. That’s the closest they would get the rest of the night, as the Beavers closed out the final three minutes of the quarter on a 12-3 run to take a 22-12 lead heading into the second quarter. In that quarter, both teams traded baskets, before Scott City closed the first half on an 11-0 run, and took a 42-22 lead at intermission. It would end up being a 15-0 run, as the Beavers distanced themselves more from the Longhorns in the third period, outscoring Holcomb 27-16, and took a 69-38 lead into the final quarter. With a running clock, the Longhorns outscored Scott City 12-6, but the damage had already been done, as the Beavers wrapped up their third straight Great West Activities Conference title. Scott City (17-1, 8-0 GWAC) finished with five players in double figures, led by Drew Kite’s 17 points, followed by Austin Habiger with 12, Trey O’Neil and Joey Meyer had 11, and Brett O’Neil added 10. Holcomb (14-4, 5-3) were led by by Heath Tucker, Aaron Hernandez and Max Ramsey with 11 points apiece.
Up next for Scott City will be a doubleheader in Colby on Friday, while Holcomb hosts Ulysses in their final regular season home games.
