Holcomb softball sweeps doubleheader with Scott City

Holcomb, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It was the season opener for both teams on Tuesday in Holcomb, as the Lady Longhorns played host to Scott City in teams who are all too familair with each other. Both teams have played each other three times in the previous three seasons, which includes the regional championships. The Lady Beavers won the last meeting in Scott City in 2023 in the regional championship. Tuesday, it was Holcomb who would take the double header, winning 3-0 and 3-2.

Holcomb 3, Scott City 0, Game 1
Holcomb jumped out early in the first game of the day, taking advange of two early base runners. A pair of RBI groundouts gave them a 2-0 lead after the first inning. Scott City went in order over the first three innings, and all by strikeout, as they would have their first baserunner with two outs in the fourth inning. The Lady Beavers had their chances in the fifth and sixth innings to plate a run, but were unable to drive anyone home. Holcomb took advantage of two errors on the same play in the bottom of the sixth to add some insurnace to make it 3-0, and they would win by that count.

Rian Rodriguez had two RBI in game 1, as she had a hit. Korryn Johnson got the win, going seven innings, scattering two hits with 15 strikeouts. Cheyenne Cramer, gave up three runs, one earned, on four hits with nine strikeouts.

Holcomb 3, Scott City 2, Game 2
Holcomb would once again score first, with a run in the first inning. After Scott City was unable to put anyone on the bases in the first three innings, their offense would show life in the fourth. A Crissa Irvin double would get the inning rolling, as Jesarella Vavarrette doubled and drove in a run. The Lady Beavers held a 2-1 lead until the fifth innings, when Rian Rodriguez and Ashland Wilson would single in runs. Scott City had a chance to jump ahead in the sixth, but left the bases loaded. The Lady Longhorns would hang on for the 3-2 win, and complete the doubleheader sweep.

Korryn Johnson struck out 10 in seven innings of work, as shey gave up two unearned runs on four hits. Rian Rodriguez had three hits and two RBI for the Lady Longhorns. Cheyenne Cramer took the loss, giving up three runs, one earned, on six hits with 10 strikeouts. Jesarella Navarrette had two hits and an RBI in the loss. 

 

Scott City is 0-2 overall, 0-2 in GWAC play, as they will play at Lakin on Thursday. Holcomb is 2-0 overall, and 2-0 in league play, as they face TMP Marian on Thursday.
