Lady Beaver season ends in Wellington

Wellington, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Scott City knew it would be a big task ahead of them on Friday night in the sub-state championship game, as they took on the No. 2 ranked team in Class 4A in the Wellington Lady Crusaders. Wellington was the top seed in the west in Class 4A, as they would smother the Lady Beavers from the opening tip in a 58-22 lost at Wellington High School.

The Lady Crusaders opened the game with a 19-2 run in the first quarter, as Scott City got a basket midway through the opening eight minutes. For the first two minutes of the second period, the Lady Beavers were able to stay even with Wellington, but the Lady Crusaders used a 10-0 run to lead 33-6 with 2:06 left before the break. Scott City trailed 37-11 at intermission. To open the second half, Wellington (21-1) scored the first 10 points to give them a 49-11 lead with 3:08 remaining in the third frame. The Lady Beavers trailed by as many as 39 points in the contest late in the third quarter, as they were only able to string together a mini run just once. Scott City (11-11) trailed 54-18 heading into the final quarter, as both teams managed four points apiece in the final period, and the final would be 58-22.

Leading the way for Wellington was Val Norwood, who had 14 points, while Lyndi Barton added 13 and Britt Zeka had 12 points. The Lady Crusaders were 5-8 from the free throw line, and did commit 16 turnovers. They have now won 20 consecutive games. Scott City was led by Crissa Irvin, who tied a career-high with eight points. The Lady Beavers went 4-8 from the foul line and committed 26 turnovers.

Wellington qualified for state for a third consecutive year, and has no seniors on their roster. They were the top seed last year, when they were knocked off by eventual state champion Bishop Miege in the first round of state. They were fourth in 2022.

Scott City wrapped up their season with an 11-11 record, their most wins since 2020 when they had 20 wins, and it was their first sub-state championship appearance since 2020. The Lady Beavers lose two seniors in Erika Felker and Cheyenne Cramer. Felker started 86 games in her career, while Cramer was a two-year starter.
