Longhorns sweep Syracuse in regular season finale

Holcomb, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Tuesday night was the regular season finale for the Holcomb Longhorns, as they faced off against old Hi-Plains League rival in the Syracuse Bulldogs. It would be a big night for the Longhorns on Senior Night, as the girls picked up a 68-26 win, while the boys cruised to a 72-44 victory.

In the girls game, Holcomb jumped out to a 14-7 lead, before leading leading 29-17 at the break. Defense was big for the Lady Longhorns in the final half of play, as they held Syracuse to just five points to lead 48-22, before picking up a 68-26 win. Leading the way for Holcomb was Halle Jones with 17 points, while Jera Kruleski had 16 poitns and Bella Galliart added 10. The Lady Longhorns were 6-13 from the foul line. Syracuse got 11 points from Denise Alcanter, as they went just 3-6 from the line.

Holcomb closed out the regular season at 15-5, while Syracuse is now 6-14.

On the boys side, it would be a tight game early on as the Longhorns held an early 16-14 lead after the opening frame. The middle two quarters would prove to be big for Holcomb, as they outscored the Bulldogs 17-4 in the second frame to lead 33-18 at intermission A 28-15 Longhorn run in the third gave them a cushion as they took a 61-33 lead into the fourth, before picking up the 72-44 win. Four Holcomb players were in double figures, as Kaeden hardy and Jareht Harrell each had 15 points, while Brody Densiton and Korbin Johnson added 10 points apiece. Holcomb was 7-8 from the foul line. Syracuse got 16 points by Brody Keller, 11 points from Alvaro Leyva and 10 by Kaidin Upson. The Bulldogs were 3-5 from the charity line.

Holcomb improved to 13-7, while Syracuse dropped to 14-6.

Up next for the Longhorns is sub-state play. The Holcomb boys will face Colby on Monday, while the girls will play at home on Tuesday, either against Southwestern Heights or Phillipsburg.
