Broncbusters Football Outlasted by No. 4 Snow in Shootout
GARDEN CITY, KS. – The Broncbusters came in playing some of their best football in the season over their last three games. They put together another strong performance in their home finale on Saturday.
Ultimately, the No. 4 Snow Badgers packed that little bit more in a thrilling week 11 matchup.
The Garden City Broncbusters fell just short in their final home game of the regular season, 33-32 against the No. 4 Snow Badgers on Saturday afternoon. The Broncbusters led twice, but lost on a game-winning touchdown by Snow’s Jared Wilson with 1:42 to go in the game.
The game got off to a sluggish start, scoreless after the first quarter. The teams would combine for 39 points in the second quarter, with Broncbusters’ wide receiver Khamran Laborn scoring the first two touchdowns.
“Kham Laborn got things going,” third-year offensive coordinator Ryan Felker said. “He’s electric, he’s fun to watch, and he made some plays.”
Coupled with his 11-yard touchdown to open the ballgame, the Buffalo transfer finished with 105 all-purpose yards in the defeat. Laborn has now scored three touchdowns in the last two weeks; one on the ground, one through the air, and one on special teams.
Garden City (4-6, 2-3 KJCCC) took their first lead of the ballgame late in the second quarter, with quarterback Jalen Daniels lobbing an inch-perfect 60-yard touchdown pass to Oregon transfer Isaiah Brevard for an 18-14 lead.
Out of the halftime break, Daniels would scamper into the end zone from nine yards out to restore Garden City’s lead. The quarterback, who missed last week’s win over Ellsworth, put together one of his finest performances of the season.
“He started to hit his stride and ended the first half really well,” Felker said. “He played well.”
Daniels went for a season-high 290 passing yards, three-all purpose touchdowns, and completed nearly 70 per cent of his passes.
Snow (8-2) quarterback Donovan Smith struggled in the second half, throwing two interceptions to Garden City’s Keshawn Washington and Jordan Polart.
Smith, who has now thrown for over 2000 yards this season, hadn’t thrown an interception in over 22 quarters of football, dating back to September.
When the lights were brightest, Smith came through. The Badgers marched 77 yards down the field in the fourth, with Smith hitting Wilson in the end zone to give Snow College the lead. Garden City would gain a couple of first downs, but came up one yard short on a pivotal fourth down to seal a Badger win.
Garden City will close their 2023 regular season on the road against the Coffeyville Red Ravens. Coverage begins from Veterans Memorial Stadium at 12:30 P.M. with the American Implement pregame show on KWKR 99.9 ‘The Rock’. Kickoff between the Broncbusters and Red Ravens is scheduled for 1:00.
