GARDEN CITY, KS. – Greg Franklin came to Garden City with high standards; to build a championship-winning program.

He’d done it at Chipola College, winning the NJCAA National Championship in 2015. There’s a lot of work that goes into building a program like that, and even 60-point wins have their blemishes.

Franklin won his coaching debut for the Garden City Broncbusters, who flattened the Lamar Runnin’ Lopes, 100-40 at Conestoga Arena on Thursday Night. The Broncbusters led from the opening possession of the game, and frankly, never looked back.

Sophomore Stevi Yancy saw coach Franklin’s vision from the moment the two first talked. The lone returner from last season knew that this program could be on a massive upswing with him at the helm.

“He had a good mission,” Yancy said. “I knew he was going to get me where I wanted to go, so I bought in for him.”

Franklin had mentioned that she would need to score the ball for this team, and delivered with a joint-team-high 20 points in the victory.

The Broncbusters (1-0) blew the game wide open early on, leading by 22 at the end of the first quarter, and by 34 at the half. Freshman Antonicia Moultrie came out hot, delivering her first career double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds.

“That’s a stat-stuffer right there,” Franklin said. “Her, [Driessen] getting deflections… that caused a lot of ruckus.”

Garden City caused ruckus all night long. A major key throughout was creating turnovers, scoring 48 points off 41 Lamar (0-1) turnovers.

“We press three-quarter court,” Franklin said. “We’ve got a good group, we just have to watch out for tacky-tack fouls and keep people in the game.”

The Broncbusters came into this season as the No. 6 team in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference, despite finishing 11 games under .500 the year prior. Thursday night’s opener proved those polls right, the hype around Franklin and this unit is for real.

Garden City continues their non-conference slate tomorrow night against the Otero Rattlers. Coverage begins from La Junta, CO. at 5:40 P.M. with The American Implement Pregame Show. Tip-off between the Broncbusters and Rattlers is scheduled for 6:00 on KWKR 99.9 ‘The Rock’.
