Beavers bounce back in shutout win over TMP Marian

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Playing in their final non-district games on Friday night, Scott City played host to the TMP Marian Monarchs in hopes to gain momentum heading into district play. While it took a little over 12 for Scott City to score, the Beavers would need just the second and fourth quarters to do all their scoring in a 30-0 win at Darner Field over the previously unbeaten Monarchs.

Both teams struggled moving the ball in the first quarter. Field position all night favored Scott City as they had only two drives all night that ended in their own territory, while TMP crossed midfield just twice.

The Beavers scored on their fourth series of the half, as they took advantage of a high punt snap. A two-play, five-yard drive ended on the first play of the second quarter on a one-yard run by Camden Vulgamore to go up 6-0, after the extra point was no good. Two possessions later, Scott City capitalized on a blocked punt by Avry Noll. On the second play of the drive, it was Vulgamore who found paydirt from six yards out to extend the lead to 12-0 with 2:44 left in the half. Collin McDaniel would run in the two-point conversion to make it 14-0. Scott City would get the ball back after a Monarch three-and-out, but would commit a turnover right before halftime, and it would be 14-0 Beavers at intermission.

TMP Marian got a first down to begin the second half, but gave the ball back to the Beavers. Scott City would convert a third down, but a turnover near midfield ended their drive, giving the Monarchs excellent field position at their own 47 yard line. However, TMP was unable to convert a fourth and three, giving the Beavers the ball at the Scott City 44 with 3:30 remaining in the third quarter.

To begin the fourth quarter, a four-yard touchdown run by Noll extended the lead to 21-0 with the Jackson Rumford PAT with 11:55 left. That capped off a 10-play drive. The Beavers would take advantage of short field again, as a 19-yard run by Collin McDaniel with 7:57 left pushed the lead to 27-0, as the extra point was no good. With 2:48 left, Scott City put the final points of the night on a 25-yard field goal by Jackson Rumford to make the final 30-0.

Camden Vulgamore went 7-10 passing for 90 yards, with an interception. Collin McDaneil had three catches for 39 yards, and rushed for another 67 yards on nine carries with a touchdown. Pierce Vallejo added 51 yards rushing on eight carries, all in the second half. Scott City had 256  yards of offense, with 166 on the ground.

For TMP Marian, Peyton Schwartz was 3-9 passing for 34 yards with an interception, as all three passes were completed to Adler Brown. Schwartz rushed for 31 yards on 15 carries. The Monarchs finished with 81 yards of offense, as they rushed for 47 yards.

With the win, Scott City has now won 10 straight in the series, and hold an 18-7-1 series lead over the Monarchs. It’s the fifth shutout in the series. The Beavers are now 3-1 for a third straight year at the midway point of the regular season. In the win, Scott City coach Jim Turner has 57 wins, taking over sole possession of the third most wins in program history, breaking a tie with Bill Arnold.

Scott City begins district play next Friday, with a trip to Hugoton against the Eagles. Hugoton went to Colby and picked up a 27-6 victory to improve to 4-0 on the season, and are 1-0 in Class 3A, District 8 play. Thomas More Prep Marian will head to rival Russell next Friday, who is 2-2 after their loss to Beloit 30-12 on Friday night in Class 2A, District 8 play.
