Scott City blows past Cimarron
Cimarron, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–For the first 12 minutes of the game, Cimarron owned the game. They held the ball for 11 minutes, and led 7-0 after the first quarter. For the last three quarters, it was all Scott City.
The Beavers would score 41 unanswered points to down the Bluejays 49-13 to open up the season.
Cimarron would take the opening drive for a little over nine minutes of the game. They started the game on an 18-play drive, including two fourth down conversions. They scored on 4th & 18 at the Scott City 26 with 2:56 left in the opening quarter on a 26-yard touchdown pass from Trace Kopper to Holden Kite, who made an over the shoulder catch. David Mendez booted in the extra point to make it 7-0 Cimarron.
On the ensuing kickoff, Scott City would return the kick to the Bluejay 45, but fumbled the ball. However, Cimarron would go three-and-out. The Beavers only had two offensive snaps in the first quarter.
Scott City scored on the second play of the second quarter, on a 29 yard touchdown run by Collin McDaniel to pull to within 7-6. The two-point conversion failed. Following another three-and-out by the Bluejays, the Beavers scored on the second play of their next drive, as McDaniel would score from 65 yards out with 7:29 left before halftime. Camden Vulgamore connected with Jackson Rumford on the two-point conversion to give Scott City their first lead a 14-7.
The Beavers scored one more time before half. With 2:46 remaining before the break, Tracer Chapman scored from four yards out, as Junior Meza booted in the PAT to extend the lead to 21-7. That would be the score at the break.
To open the second half, Scott City wasted little time getting on the board again. A four-play drive saw Camden Vulgamore connect with Collin McDaniel from 11 yards out with 1:54 left in the third quarter. Dayanara Castillo kicked in the extra point to extend the lead to 28-7. The Beavers scored two more times in the period. The first came with 6:08 left in the quarter on a 24-yard pass from Vulgamore to McDaniel, and capped the third quarter scoring off with a one-yard run by Griffin Edwards with 1:23 remaining in the third quarter to extend the lead to 41-7.
Cimarron scored with four minutes left on a 98-yard drive, capped off by a Trace Kopper two-yard run to make it 41-13. They missed the two-point conversion. The second team for Scott City would score one final time on the night, with a Kelton Cook one-yard run with 2:06 left. Kevin Wiebe ran in the two-point conversion to make the final 49-13.
Scott City amassed 551 yards of offense, with 403 on the ground. Collin McDaniel rushed for 216 yards on just six carries and two touchdowns. Avry Noll added 77 yards on four carries. Camden Vulgamore passed for 148 yards and two touchdowns, both to McDaniel. Alex Tarango had two receptions for 78 yards.
Cimarron had 256 yards of offense, with 133 on the ground and 123 through the air. Trace Kopper rushed for 94 yards on 18 carries and a touchdown, and passed for 123 yards and a touchdown. David Mendez had two receptions for 74 yards.
With the win, Scott City has now won seven straight season openers, and 15 of their last 16. The Beavers lead the all-time series 16-7, and now hold a 4-1 record in Cimarron since 2010. The 49 points are the most scored in a week one game since they put up 51 at Abilene in 2012.
At 1-0 Scott City will host Wray, Colorado on Friday for their season opener. The Eagles are 2-0 after their 52-14 win at Goodland. Cimarron is 0-1 and will be at Holcomb, who fell to Liberal at home in the final seconds 23-17 on Friday.
