Lady Beaver volleyball split matches in Oakley

Oakley, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Scott City opened up their season on Friday with a trip to Oakley to face the Wallace County Wildcats and Oakley Plainsmen in a triangular. Each team would leave with a split, as Scott City started out their season with a 25-22, 25-20 win over the Lady Wildcats, but fell to the Lady Plainsmen 25-20, 25-22. Wallace County defeated Oakley 25-16, 25-23.

In their opening match against Wallace County, Scott City would trail for a majority of the match. The Lady Wildcats opened up a 9-3 lead and led 19-14 late in the first set, when the Lady Beavers rallied back to pull to within 19-18. Trailing 20-18, Scott City closed the set on a 7-2 run to pull away late for a 25-22 win. Their second set was similar, as they would trail early on, despite starting out with a 4-1 lead. Wallace County led 19-14 in the second set, when the Lady Beavers closed out the match with an 11-1 run to win 25-20. They used an 8-0 run to lead 22-19 late in the set. Dayanara Castillo had six kills, and Megan Trout added five kills for the Lady Beavers. Scott City was able to take advantage of several Lady Wildcat serving errors throughout.

It was the complete opposite for Scott City in their finale of the day against Oakley. The opening set saw the Lady Beavers jump out to an 8-3 lead, only to see the Lady Plainsmen use an 11-3 run to lead 14-11. Scott City was only able to pull to within 20-18, as they fell in the opening set 25-20. Scott City led for a majority of the second set, leading 17-12. They led 20-16, when it looked like they would force a third set. However, and Oakley timeout turned the whole set around, as the Lady Plainsmen closed the match on a 9-2 run to win 25-22. The Lady Beavers would have key service errors in the match. Megan Trout had seven kills, while Dayanara Castillo added four kills. Kendall Gentry and Avery Lewis had two service aces. 

Scott City is 1-1 on the year, as they will compete in the Maroon & Gold Invitational in Hays on Saturday. They will face Hays High, Maize South and TMP Marian in pool play.
