Garden City police make arrests in separate cases July 4th
Garden City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Garden City Police Department made a pair of arrests, stemming from separate cases on Tuesday.
In the first case, a Garden City man was arrested Tuesday following a criminal threat investigation. Andres Ortegon faces charges after allegedly making threats against a family member.
Around 7:45 p.m., Officers of the Garden City Police Department met with the family member, who stated the 42-year-old Ortegon allegedly threatened harm against them, placing the family member in fear of their life. Officers responded to Ortegon’s residence in the east part of Garden City. When Officers contacted Ortegon, Ortegon refused to listen to instructions and was subsequently arrested.
An affidavit for Ortegon was filed requesting the charges of Criminal Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Criminal Threat, Felony Interference of a Law Enforcement Officer, and Battery of a Law Enforcement Officer.
The case has been forwarded to the Finney County Attorney’s Office for further review.
The second case saw Garden City Police arrest a man Tuesday for driving under the influence after he struck an Officer’s vehicle twice.
Fifty-six-year-old Edward Cavasos, faces numerous charges from the incident.
Around 12:40 p.m. on Tuesday, Officers were dispatched to the intersection of Spruce Street and Campus Drive for a reported reckless driver in the area.
An Officer located a Chevy Silverado, driven by Cavasos, stopped in the middle of the intersection of Spruce Street and Jennie Barker Road after crossing multiple lanes of traffic. Cavasos proceeded to strike the front of the Officer’s police car and left the scene. The Officer conducted a traffic stop in the 3400 block of East Spruce Street, and Cavasos again hit the Officer’s vehicle before coming to a stop. Through further investigation, it was determined that Cavasos was driving under the influence. Cavasos was taken into custody and transported to St. Catherine Hospital for evaluation.
An affidavit for Cavasos was filed requesting the following charges: Aggravated Battery of a Law Enforcement Officer, DUI (5th), two counts of Hit and Run, Transporting an Open Container, Driving While Suspended, Driving on Unapproved Surface, Unable to Maintain Lane, and Reckless Driving.
The case has been forwarded to the Finney County Attorney’s Office for further review.
The Officer was not injured, and no other injuries or property damage were reported from the accident.
