Lady Beaver rally falls short at Goodland

Goodland, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It was cold, breezy, and drizzly Tuesday for softball in Goodland, as Scott City made the trek to Goodland to face the Cowgirls in GWAC play. Due to deteriorating conditions, the doubleheader was reduced to one game, as Goodland held off a late rally by the Lady Beavers in a 9-8 final.

Despite not having a hit in the first inning, Goodland would plate two runs, taking advantage of two walks. They extended their lead in the second inning to 3-0, taking advantage of a pair of errors, as Haley Biermann scored on a pair of errors. Scott City got on the board in the third inning on an RBI by Jordynn Kough that scored Jeserella Navarrette. The Lady Beavers tacked on another run in the fourth on a passed ball to pull to within 3-2. 

In the fifth, the Cowgirls would send 10 to bat, as they scored five runs to extend their lead to 8-2. 

Scott City responded in the sixth inning with three runs to pull to within 8-5, as the scoring started on a Malorie Cupp RBI sac fly that scored Crissa Irvin. With two outs, Navarrette doubled in Mackayla and Madison Miller to pull the Lady Beavers to within 8-5. 

Goodland tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth, on a leadoff home run by Grace Riedesel.

In the seventh, Scott City would score three runs, as Cheyenne Cramer had a two-run double, followed by a Mackayla Miller RBI single. They would ground out to end the game and fall a run short 9-8.

Ally Cure gave up eight runs, two earned, on five hits with five strikeouts and four walks in seven innings. Grace Riedesel had two hits and two RBI in the game for the Cowgirls. For Scott City, Cheyenne Cramer gave up nine runs, six earned, on six hits with nine strikeouts and three walks in six innings of work. She also had a hit and two RBI and Jeserella Navarrette had two hits and drove in two runs.

After Tuesday, Scott City is 9-4 overall, 5-4 in GWAC play. They will play at Liberal on Thursday and return to Goodland on Friday for game two of the doubleheader. Goodland is now 11-4 overall, and 6-1 in league play.
