CONCORDIA–No. 13 Dodge City’s men couldn’t overcome an ice cold shooting performance in a 76-66 upset loss to Cloud County, but the 11th-ranked Conq women knocked in four timely triples down the stretch to down the T-Birds 74-59 in a doubleheader Wednesday at Arley Bryant Gymnasium.

In the men’s game, Dodge City shot less than 29% from the floor and a paltry 3-for-20 from outside the arc. Those two stats coupled with 59% at the foul line paved the way for Cloud County to grab their fifth win over a ranked team and end a six-game losing skid.

Cloud County stretched the lead to as many as 17 early in the second half, but the Conqs countered and sawed that down to single digits multiple times in the last five minutes. That was as close as they would come despite forcing 28 Cloud turnovers.

Jacobi Sebock registered a double-double for the Conqs with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Jason Edwards was Dodge City’s leading scorer with 15 points on just 6-for-21 shooting. Shawn Warrior added 14 points off the bench and DJ Jones chipped in 10.

Corey Sawyer scored a game-high 23 points for the T-Birds.

The No. 13 Conquistadors fall to 19-7 (15-5 KJCCC) with the loss and return to action Saturday when they host Independence. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. CT.

In the women’s game, Dodge City’s defense was stifling, holding Cloud County to 27% shooting in the contest, including just 4-of-19 on 3-pointers. They also forced 23 T-Bird turnovers.

Dodge grabbed a five point halftime lead thanks to a 14-4 extended run to close out the first half and never trailed again.

The Conqs, who average the fourth-most made 3-pointers per game nationally, sank 10 of them in Wednesday’s game, with four coming in the fourth quarter from Jenna Rose Mafua. Those shots accounted for all 12 points in the contest for Mafua.

Jada Burton was Dodge’s leading scorer with 17 points. Bree Stephens and Jenna Rose Mafua were the only other two in double figures and scored 16 and 12 points respectively.

Wednesday’s win marked Dodge City’s 17th consecutive victory and their first win in Concordia since 2005.

The No. 11 Conquistadors improve to 24-2 (19-1 KJCCC) with the win and return to action Saturday when they host Independence. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT.
