Conqs sweep Hutchinson

HUTCHINSON–Both Jason Edwards and Cam Malray set new career highs in points for No. 14 Dodge City Saturday, as they pulled away from Hutchinson to win 104-88, and the 11th-ranked Conq women thrashed the Dragons 69-35 in a doubleheader Saturday at Hutchinson Sports Arena.
In the men’s game, Dodge City forced Hutchinson into a more half-court game in the first half, and by the time the Dragons decided to turn on the press, the deficit was too large, and the Conqs handled the pressure with ease. They outscored Hutchinson 29-8 on fast break points.
The Conqs racked up 63 points in the second half against a defense that gives up more than 95 points per game–third-most in the nation.
Despite the press at times, Dodge only committed seven turnovers in the contest while attempting 66 total shots, so the added emphasis on ball security has been executed well.
Jason Edwards posted the best stat line of his college career with 38 points, eight assists, and six rebounds. That included an impressive 6-for-10 on 3-pointers.
Cam Malray also had a career-best 22 points on 8-for-13 shooting from the field.
Aaron Franklin turned in a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds for Hutchinson.
The No. 14 Conquistadors improve to 19-6 (15-4 KJCCC) with the win and return to action Wednesday when they travel to Cloud County. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. CT.
In the women’s game, after trailing 14-11 at the end of the first quarter, Dodge City made a few key offensive adjustments and took off from there.
After building an 11-point lead at the halftime break, the defense was stifling in the second half, allowing just 11 total points to the Dragons and only two in the fourth quarter.
The Conqs beat down Hutchinson in the paint, outscoring them 40-14 in the game.
Jada Burton and Georgia Gray each finished the contest with 15 points and Jenna Rose Mafua added 13.
The win gave Dragon coach John Ontjes just the 30th home loss in his 16-year career at Hutchinson and marked Dodge City’s 16th consecutive victory.
