Demons swept by Colby

DODGE CITY–A 13-0 second-half Colby run spoiled Tochi Okoro’s double-double Friday, as the Eagle boys edged Dodge City 44-39, and the Lady Eagles led wire-to-wire in a 43-25 win at Dodge City’s Fieldhouse.

In the boys game, Dodge City did a lot of the things it has struggled to do well consistently this season–hold their own on the glass (12 offensive rebounds), take care of the ball (8 turnovers) and attempt more shots than their opponent (50-37). But the paltry 3-point shooting made the difference, as the Demons limped to a 3-for-22 performance from beyond the arc.

Okoro scored a career-high 19 points and snagged 14 rebounds, six of which were on the offensive end. But he was without solid help, and was the only Demon who finished in double figures.

Meanwhile, junior college prospect Hunter Vaughn notched 18 points to lead Colby.

The Red Demons fall to 5-11 with the loss and return to action Tuesday when they host Garden City. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CT.

In the girls game, Colby set the tone and controlled the pace from start to finish. That doesn’t mean it was pretty–the two teams combined for 37 turnovers and 21 made shots in the contest.

Colby raced out of the gate to an 11-3 lead and never looked back from there. Alisabeth Barton scored 18 points while battling foul trouble to spark the Lady Eagle win.

Colby also won the battle of the boards 32-22 and forced 20 Dodge City turnovers, which they converted into 26 points. Dodge only scored seven points off of the 17 Lady Eagle turnovers.

Becca Unruh was the lone Lady Demon in double figures with 12 points.

The Lady Demons fall to 7-9 with the loss and return to action Tuesday when they host Garden City. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.
