Scott City swept by Hays
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–On Winter Homecoming night on Tuesday, the Scott City Beavers played their third school from the Western Athletic Conference in the Hays High Indians. It would be a sweep for the visitors, as the Lady Indians picked up a 46-32 win, while the boys from Hays would win 51-38.

It would be a slow start for Scott City in the first and third quarters. Hays would score the first seven points, and close the opening period with seven straight to lead 16-4 going in to the second quarter. The Beavers would get their offense going, and pulled to within 18-12 at the break, thanks to an 8-2 second quarter run. However, the Indians started out the second half like the opening half. A 7-0 run to begin the third quarter pushed the Lady Indian lead to 25-12 with 2:24 left in the third frame. Both teams scored nine points after that, as Hays (9-4) led 34-21 going in to the fourth quarter. Their lead grew to 38-21 with 5:17 left, and the closest Scott City (6-9) got was 12 at 40-28 with 3:17 remaining. It would be the Lady Indians would finish on top 46-32.
Leading the way for Hays was Molly Martin, who had 11 points, as they had at five players score at least six points. Scott City was led by Brooke Strine’s 18 points, as they saw just four players score.
With the loss, the Lady Beavers have dropped four consecutive games, and see Hays win their third straight in the series, as the Lady Indians lead the all-time series 4-1.

In a game that was a battle of brother-in-law head coaches, the night would belong to the visitors from Hays. Despite the game being tied at two early on, the Indians never trailed. Neither side had a big run throughout, but Hays found a way to extend their lead for most of the night. As for the Beavers, they could never put together a string of points until the second half. Hays (7-6) took a 10-6 lead after the opening eight minutes, and extended their lead to 14-6 in in the first minute of the second quarter. Scott City struggled from the field, hitting only two field goals in the first half. Even though the Beavers couldn’t convert field goal attempts, they stayed in the game at the foul line. Hays led 26-13 at the break, as they closed the half on a 7-0 run. Both teams opened the second half with a four-point spurt, as the Indians maintained a double-digit lead. Scott City (7-8) trailed 33-21 heading into the final quarter, but never gave up. They were able to pull to within 39-33 with 4:26 left. The Indians responded with seven straight to lead 46-33 with 3:06 left. The Beavers made it 47-38 with 1:47 left, as Hays closed the game with four free throws.
Dawson Ruder led Hays with 12 points off the bench, as they had all nine players check in score. Scott City was led by Jackson Rumford’s 16 points, as the Beavers saw four players score.
The Indians have now won four straight in the series, and now lead the all-time series 5-4.

Scott City will remain at home, as they host Ulysses in GWAC play on Friday night in the middle of their three-game homestand. Hays returns home to face Dodge City in WAC play on Friday.
